PRESBYTERIAN SYNOD IN
SESSION HERE LAST WEEK
(Continued from page 2).
The report of the committee was i
presented by Dr. Reavis and set forth j
in succinct terms the condition and
outlook of the great work. Pending
its adoption, synod was addressed by
the Rev. S. II. Wilds of the Congo
mission, Africa, and the Rev. Palmer
C. DuBose of the Mid-China mission.
Both these young men are members
of the synod and were trained in Columbia
seminary and ordained by
Charleston presbytery. Their addresses
received deep attention, called
forth not only by the thrilling interest
of the subject but also by a warm
personal sympathy. Dr. DuBose is a
son of the Rev. II. C. DuBose, the
late lamented missionary, who was
one of the pioneers of the work in
China. Mr. Wilds is a Columbian.
The report was then appproved and
its recommendation adopted.
The report of the directors of Columbia
seminary was presented and
reported to the committee on seminary.
The report of the treasurer was received
and referred to the finance
committee.
Synod then adjourned until tomorrow
morning.
A a Uf ? ?
ni, me weunesuay evening session
of the Presbyterian synod the
special order was local home missions.
The Rev. E. E. Gillespie, 1). I)., of
Yorkville, chairman of the executive
committee, presided.
Excellent music was furnished by
the line choir which has done so much
to add to the pleasure of the more
popular sessions of the body.
The first address of the evening
was by the Rev. J. B. Green of Greenwood.
It was a thoughtful and scholarly
setting forth of the importance
of America's part in the evangelizing
the world. One hears much of
the incoming flood of immigrants, not *
so much of the great number who return
to the lands whence they came
bearing with them the lessons learned
here. The importance of Christianity
for them can not be overestimated.
One of the dangers is our increasing
love for money. The task
that confronts the American church is
unsurpassed. The tasks of the South;
the foreign population in Louisiana
and the Birmingham district, the
mountaineers, the negroes, the West.
The Rev. G. G. Mayes addressed
the synod for home missions from the
standpoint of the superintendent,
briefly and forcibly and made a
strong appeal for a more adequate
support of the work. Report of committee
on the theological seminary
was adopted and John McSwean, the

members of the board of directors.
Synod met at !? o'clock ,a in. and
alter devotional exercises conducted
by Rev. A. W. Blackwood .pastor of
the First church of Columbia, resumed
transaction of business.
Minutes of Wednesday were read
and approved.
Special committee on Montreat
made report. It made special notice
of the William Brearley home, the
munificent gift of E. Mclver Williamson,
and recommended the election
of D. T. McKeithan, W. C. Whitner, I.
Wills Todd, G. II. Cornelson and the
Rev. G. G. Mayes as trustees of the
property. The thanks of synod to the
generous donor for his splendid gift
were renewed.
A special c< mnittee was moved to
consider the matter in the report of
the committee 011 education and to report
later in this session. Pending 1
discussion recess was taken during
the funeral of Mrs. Morgan.
Committees Are Named.
After recess the standing committee
presented its report on the report
of the executive committee of local
home missions. The recommendations
in the report were considered
seriatim and adopted.
The following special committee
was appointed to consider and report
on the recommendations of the com
miuee on Christian education and
ministerial relief: The Rev. W. B.
Arrowood, 1). D., the Rev. R. B. Grinnan,
D. D., the Rev. VV. H. Fraser, 1).
1)., John McSwain, A. B. Blake.
The Rev. Homer McMillan, 1) .1).,
of the Synod of Georgia was introduced
and invited to sit as a corresponding
member.
The report of committee on assembly's
home missions was presented
and pending its adoption synod was
addressed by the Rev. Homer McMillan.
1). D., secretary of assembly's
committee. He toid of the work
among the emigrants from foreign
lands?foreign missions at home; of
that among the negroes of the mountain
missions; in tbe convict camps of
the South, our church being the tirst
to engage in organized work among
the prisoners; and finally of the growing
work in the new Southwest. He
brought out the threefold appeal of
the facts presented: (1) Salvation or
the individual; (2) of the country?
civilization; (3) of the world. His
address was original and striking, received
close attention and made a
deep impression. The report was
then adopted.
Committee on bills and overtures
presented its report. 1. On an overture
from the Johnston church concerning
the part taken by girls in
young people's societies.
Before the completion of the report
recess was taken to 3 p. m.
Afternoon Session.
Committee on narrative made a report
which was adopted.
Committee on bills and overtures
continued its report giving affirmative
answer to overture from certain members
asking if sessions should examine
officers elected by the congregation
as to their qualifications before
proceeding to their ordination. This
answer was sustained by synod.
It recommended that the overture
of the Rev. W. H. Mills concerning
the "calling of the previous question"
be forwarded to the assembly without
recommendation. This action was ordered.
It recommended that the overture
from Congaree presbytery with reference
to certain churches be granted.
The reply to an overture of the Rev.
G. G. Mayes and others concerning
adjourned meetings of presbyteries is
long and complicated.
