SEDALIA
Sedalia, S. C., Oct. lf?.?Mr. Ivlitor:
1 am a poor country clodhopper anil 1
have never attempted to tret into
print before, and it is with trepidation
that I presume to do so now, especially
when so many wise heads and wise
acres are lillintr the papers with so
many schemes to advance the price of
cotton. But it does seem to me that
of all the foolish and silly advice tinen
so far, and to my great surprise,
I see that President Stackhouse u;
dorses it, is the total elimination ol'
cotton for 1IIl."?. He further says the
opponents of the law use no argument
showintr any other method. Now,
while 1 have 110 specific method to
suggest nor advice to give, it does
strike me that the plan suggested
would he ruinous to the average
farmer and practically all the tenants j
of the cotton growing States, provided
the law became general. Why?
1. Because practically all the cotton
of the 11)11 crop will he out of the
hands of the farmer who made it hefore
next fall, when the price will
soar to perhaps 15 or 20 cents, o>
. even higher?for the mills will have
to have it and there being no more in
sight until the fall of l'JHi, they will
have to pay almost any price for it.
Consequently it will benefit only those

speculators and lie of course no benefit
to the planter whom the law is intended
to relieve. In the second place
there are thousands who could not
possibly get advances to make a crop
at aii without growing some cotton
with which to pay for the advances
and even if they could make an all
grain crop what would be the consequences.
Why, next fall everybc...
would have a lot of stutf on hand and
no demand or market for it. For
there are hundreds, yes, thousands, in
the State under such conditions and
circumstances. Could not buy a p:
i or calf to feed it to, besides the very
poor fellow who is now forced to sell
his cotton for much less than it cost
him to produce it, will have to pay for
the shirt that goes on his back, made
from the 'JO cents cotton above inen,
tinned. No, 1 cannot in ly agree with
President Slnckhouse and others who
' advise total elimination, but the lest
thing to do it to cut her down to half
' or even to one-third and make at! : upplies
possible for man and beast, ai.d
" by all means keep a pood garden.
