CROSS KEYS
Cross Keys. Sept. 22.?We are having
nice weather now for deep plowing.
The rains were light. I don't
think there is enough moisture to
spiout the clover seed that have l>e. r ,
sown and they are like peas* if there
is not sufficient moisture they will
swell and then rot or die in the sprout.
1 hear there is some disappointment
in getting seed, esprcially clover.
Farmers are cutting their peavinc ,
it is ideal weather for it and there
seems to lie a fairly good crop of
them this season, hut peas that were
planted for the fruit are not good except
early varieties.
The Cross Keys school opened yesterday
with a nice enrollment, about
seventy-live in all. Nearly all the p:- I
trons and some of the friends of the I
school were present to witness tIk*
opening exercises. Rev. A. Me A.
fit t man mode a short speech on the
education of the common people
which was instructive its well as entertaining.
The state superintendent
o! education was present and made a
fine businesslike talk. Everybody .
complimented him, hut nearly all
were ready to offer him one suggestion.
that he wear glasses. Mr. R. ('.
Little wits not present as he had expected;
he was present one year ago
and made a good speech, one that wawell
received.
An organization known as school
improvement association was started
hut wits not completed, but will be at
an early date. This is intended to
help those that need help and create
it greater interest generally in school
work. There is need of this kind of
organization for we all more or less i
have been leaving this important
matter of training our children entirely
with the teachers and if they
do not succeed as we think they 1
should we are ready to speak uncom- 1
plimentary of their work when the '
trouble is at our doors. I was glad
to see that our neople endorsed thi~
organization; T think it will stimulate 1
us to a greater interest and activity
along educational lines?something
we have been needing for some time. 1

[ wish to express my heartfelt 1
