JONESVILLE
JONESVILLE, Feb. 3.?This good
weather is almost unprecedented In t
the memory of our oldest people but f
then the weather man is promising t
some bad weathe/ soon. The last few u
days the gardens begin to show signs t
of the coming spring but I would ad- n
vise not to be deceived by a few c
spring-like days. f
Yesterday most people all over the p
country weni up to me court no use e
and it was like a reunion with many ,ti
but it had only been a month since *0
they were all there together and life t
is only what we get out of ^it^Some J
men have lived to be old afndjj
took a holiday nor ate a meal at a I
hotel in their long life. I heard a d
merchant in a certain town in this c
state say a few years since that he r
had not taken a day out from his o
business. He is now dead and he dietl t
rich but he only got a decent burial. J
The churches of our town had fine
congregations Sunday, at the Presbyterian
church in the morning and
the Methodist church at night, the
pastors seemed to be at their best
and their subjects seemed to be of the
best selection and they were j,
handled well?with skill and ability
and their hearers were well paid for
the hour they gave to the service. ^
The building of the Methodist
church in the near future seems now
to be an assured fact, as six thousand tc
dollars has been subscribed and that g?
will insure the building and the work!"
will begin in the near future. I amy
;n favor of the bill in the legislature
that has recommended strongly bylR
Gov. Blease to sell the State farmsHt
and hire the convicts to the counties! c
from whence they came. Our people d
are clamoring for good roads and
they are badly needed and this plan t
would be one of the best and I believe
the cheapest way to get good j
roads. The farms could be sold with
the stock and implements which
would help some in liquidating our (
large State indebtedness. Our Sen- *
ator Macbeth Young has his old sol- s
diers* pension bill before the senate; u
his bill would give every veteran and p
widow a bounty of $24.00 per annum.
I can say for myself that I am not in ?
favor of the bill. I was in the war 1
four years and I am sure I killed one
Yankee and perhaps killed several t)
more and wounded many, but I was a 0
volunteer and I don't expect any t
bounty. The three mill levy under ~
the Young bill would bring atxmt one
million dollars but V would flkKke
swappiryg: dollars w^h
that would get the bounty^imiWTSJ^W
upon their property would amount to
as much as the bounty would give j]
them. I think we had better go slow n
on special levies and appropriations, t
The debate upon the topic of Wo- ^
man's Suffrage that was scheduled ^
for last Friday night was continued ^
till last night. There was a very good n
audience at the school house, eager e
to hear the oratory of the debate and b
they were not disappointed for the
subject was well handled by both
sides. Dr. F. M. Ellerbe and the '
Hon. L. G. Southard stood for the *
positive side while Rev. W. S. Porter ^
and Rev. J. A. Cook stood for the ^
negative. This subject and debate is ^
something new under the sun iff a
Jonesville, but no doubt we will hear
? II
more 01 it as tne sun maices us daiiyil c
rounds, but then somebody will .-.ay: t
"Stop. Mr. Telephone, the sun doet li
not run." Well, maybe not, but wo- a
man's tongue does, hence, I say w<
will hear more of this subject.
The three judges on the debafc 1
.stpod, one for the positive and twi
for the "nvyrative, and its just th
least bit funny critit~* one wotiw
and two men of the judgeV .^jnd til (e
woman stood for positive.
