"TAGNATED AMI IIITI i .UBIT. ?
One of Union's charming young ladies
was chosen to be the school
teacher recently in one of the coast
counties of the State. Her lot as a
boarder fell with a family composed
of husband, wife and several children.
Kindhearted they were, but
none too much adorned with the
frills of refinement. The mother of
this family, after a hard day's work
when household affairs had not been
running smoothly as one might wish, '
and when there had ben a display of
considerable friction between herself
and her worthy spouse, gave expression
to her exasperation in no uncer- 1
tain terms. Coming into the sitting
room, she exclaimed as she mopped
her face, "Well, I never was so tag- i
} , nated and hell-drug in my life." Do
not be alarmed, gentle leader. This
good woman was not swearing. She
was but giving vent to pent up feelings
in the best language she knew.
You will not find these words in your
correctly spoken English, but it is a
certainty that you not only know
their meaning, but that you have
seen .times, many times, when they
would have pretty fully expressed
the state of your own mind. "Tag
nated and hell-drug," yes, it tells
its own story. Life's worries, the
jars, jolts, bumps, rough passages of
it. have frequently made you "yearn
for a Rood strong word." You perhaps
choked back the word, and you
were right to do so; but you felt
your woes, nevertheless. Some days
the machinery of your daily life run
smoothly enough. It is not of these
days that we speak. It comes to pass
now and again, that almost every
step in the journey of certain days
gives one a jar. It may be some internal
personal cause that produces
this, as, for example, a bad liver; it
may be that one thing after another
transpires to set your nerves on edge.
You say of such a day, "I put the
wrong foot out of the bed this morning."
"Tagnated and hell-drug," how
much of pent up feeling and human
philosophy are revealed in these
words! How much of our common
experience is here revealed!
Not many months a^o we had
made up the first run and as the pa
per was just well started, a bolt
broke on our press and disastrous results
followed. Two our four forms
were hurled to the floor and dumped
in a heap. Nor was that all, the press
itself, practically new, was badly
fctnashed, and was put out of commission
for ten days. At the time we
had not heard of the homely words
of the above mentioned housewife;
they would have expressed too mildly
our innermost thoughts.
Another experience, one that goes
back many years, was an experience
with fruit trees. The writer had, out
of a meagre pocketbook, purchased
N
half a dozen choice fruit trees. They
had been put out a year and were
guarded with no small degree of care.
The second season, just when they
were beginning to put forth a straggling
bloom here and there, a strange
thing happened. One morning the
trees were found to be "barked" completely
around the trunks in a belt
not less than a' foot; no possible
chance for sap ever to rise again, a
wandering goat had come in during
the night and stripped the bark. Every
tree was ruined. Never, until
the words of this much troubled
housewife were learned, had adequate
expression of the inward emotion
been found. They fit beautifully.
There are thousands of other ex-|
periences of life that might be ade- |
quately measured in the terms. Those
tu-o will do. No doubt, kind friend,
you have had numberless exporieneon
thnt could not better bo described
than in the homely words of this hon%
est soul, hard pressed and greatly exasperated:
"Well, I never was so I
tagnated and hell-drug in my life." j
SENATE ASKS COMMITTEE
TO DRAFT PRIMARY BILL
(Continued from page 1)
ment of the proposed laws. He said
that a citizen should qualify to vote
but that he should not be restricted.
Senator Christensen answered this
by saying that the candidate for office
would see to it that the voters
became acquainted with the laws. He
wanted to know if the people in the
country were protected against the
padded club rolls in the cities. Senator
Christensen said that there was
nothing in the party rules nor in the
constitution of the State to prevent I
the padding of club rolls.
