PURCHASE SITE FOR
THE BAPTIST HOSPITAL
Baptists Secure Property in Columbia?Contains
Eight Acrea?
Committee Pays $15,000 for
Tract Near Wales Gardens
to Erect Building.
(Sunday's State)
' The trustees of the South Carolina
Baptist hospital have secured a site
near the southern limits of Columbia
on which the building will be erected.
The location joins the beautiful property
of the City Development company,
known as Wales Gardens. It
faces on Lower street, directly in
front of Saluda avenue of Wales
Gardens, and is bounded on the east
by Edisto avenue, on the south is
the Rose Hill Greenhouse property,
and on the west by the property
owned by the late Abram Stork.
The site comprises eight acres and
was purchased yesterday from G. A.
Guignard, the purchase price being
$15,000. A. J. Bethea, one of the
trustees announcing the decision,
yesterday said: "The executive
members of the board of trustees to
whom was referred the matter of
buying a site think that they have
made a fine purchase. The committee
canvassed every available site in
and around Columbia and it was the
unanimous opinion of the committee
that this was the cheapest and best
site inspected. It is on a beautiful
plateau and commands a splendid
view of the city. Physicians who
have seen it say that it is an ideal location
for a hospital.
Near Union Station.
"The site selected is very accessible,
being only seven blocks from the
union station, and right at the end of
the car line which is being built along
Saluda avenue through the Wales
Gardens property. It is our information
that Saluda avenue will be paved
in a short time and paved sidewalks
are now being constructed. This
property is contiguous to the best
residential section of Columbia and
the surroundings are all that could
be desired," Mr, Bethea continued,
"The site lends itself to the erection
of a modern hospital in every respect
and there is ample opportunity for
future development in hospital equipment.
These considerations had th^ir
weight with the committee in the
selection of the site," he added.
The Baptist State convention at
Bennetsville committed itself nHjptj
heartily to the hospital idea,
is said that a great and worthy ih- '
stitution will be built.
?" ^mbers of Committee.
The xecutive committee which
selected the site consisted of: The

POLICE CHIEF SHOt BY
DRUGGIST IN BAD CONDITION
FARMVILLE, Jan. 19.?Chief of
Police T. H. Smith is in a Washington
hospital, dangeroiviy wounded
ar fhe result of a pis-.:*1 shos wound
made by the weapon of S. M. Pollard,
druggist, of this place, Saturday
night about 10 o'clock.
The shooting took place in Mr.
Pollard's drug store and was witnessed
by several people. None of
these could give any accurate account
of what hapened prior to the
firing. It is agreed that Mr. Pollard
ordered Mr. Smith to leave his store
and the chief refused, when he was
fired upon. The druggist is said to
have shot twice, but only one bullet
did any damage. It entered the ab
domen trom the front and has been
located, but it is not known whether
there are any perforations or not,
It is feared there are, and that the
condition of the officer is desperate.
Immediately aftel the shooting,
Mr. Pollard surrendered and was
placed under a heavy bond, which he
gave. The wounded officer was sent
to Washington through the country
and put in the hospital.
After being shot, Chief Smith
grappled with the druggist and
wrenched the weapon from his
hands, but made no effort to shoot.
The officer then collapsed and local
physicians ministered to him.
The prominence of both men gave
to the affair a touch of the sensaonal
and it has been the talk of the
town.

Nothing Can Undermine it in
Union.
People are sometimes slow to reconize
true merit, and they cannot be
blamed, for so many have been humbugged
in the past. The experience
of hundreds of Union residents, expressed
publicly through newspapers
and other sources, places Doan's Kidney
Pills on a firm foundation here.
J. A. Chambers, 36 Gage Ave., Union,
S. C., says: "I began to suffer
from kidney trouble about five years
ago. The pain was mostly in my left
kidney and trouble. I had a too frequent
desire to pass the kidney secretions
and the flow was scanty and
distressing. When I heard of Doan's
Kidney Pills, I got a supply from the
Palmetto Drug Co. A few boxes
corrected the trouble. It is a pleasure
for me to recommend Doan's
Kidney Pills a second time. I still
consider this remedy a most reliable
one for kidney trouble."
