ANCIENT DARKY PEPPERED^
WHEN ALARM WENT |l'f
"Uncle" Henry Richardson Had seat
ol Trousers Torn Away As He
Emerged From Chicken
House
Greenville News.
Henry Richardson, a true type of
the ante-bellum negro, is resting at
city police headquarters with about
thirty bird shot beneath his skin as
the result of some "fowl" play on
Saturday night. Mr. Jacob Sterns,
who lives on the outskirts of the city
pnd who is a great chicken fancier,
heard a noise in his fowl house on
Saturday night and, upon investiira
tion, found "Uncle" Henry in his
back yard. The old darkey was unable
to explain his presence and made
an effort to get away. In the scuffle
Mr. Stern's shot gun went off and
peppered the ministerial old negro
with small bird shot. Mr. Sterns
then held him until the police arrived.
"Uncle" Henry claims that he was
showing two white men the way to
Mr. Sterns' house and that he became
mixed up in the dark and got into
the wrong path. Mr. Sterns has
missed some of his chickens on a
number of occasions and had rigged
up a burglar alarm from the chicken
house to his bedroom. On Saturday
night about 11 o'clock the alarm went
off but UDon search nohodv pnnU ho
found. It went off a second time
about an hour later and it was then
that the venerable old negro was
found in the vicinity of the fowl
house, the result being that he is now
unable to sit down with comfort.
"Uncle" Henry's feelings are highly
mortified and he stoutly maintains
that he is innocent. He asked yesterday
morning that his people be
notified of his trouble. An officer
went to his home and told his family
the nature of his trouble. In reply
one of them said, "I'se done tole Henry
long time ago 'bout stealingniem
fowls."
The old negro's wounds were dressed
by Dr. R. E. Houston.
