OVER THE
Joncsvillc News Letter.
Jonesville, S. C., April 18.?Forty
(ight years ago this morning, I arriv>d
safely at home from Appomattox,
/a., where I had on the 9, surrcnder:d
as one of Gen. Lee's army. My
;ood mother was so glad to see her
>aby boy (as I was the youngest
:hild) come home to stay and comfort
her heart. She got me up a
change of clothes and I took a bath
and a good scrubbing, put on the
clean clothes and consigned my army
clothes which were infested with
friends that sticketh closer than a
brother to the "Potters Field". I had
one brother older than I who came
in with me. We both went out at
the beginning of the war and had
survived without even being wounded
Our home was happy but it was not
so with many other homes over the
country, there were many weeping
wives and mothers and sisters, who
had lost their loved ones in the war.
Many of them left upon the battlefields
without even a decent soldiers
burial. Some men lost their sons in
the war and their property by the
result of war. Many a man that was
well off was made poor in a day and
most of the men in our country startout
about on an equality and while
some have improved their time and
have accummulated enough for a
good living, many others have wasted
their time and arc seeking aid from j
the government.
April 22, Mrs. Dick Foster died at
the home of her husband, over in
Cherokee county, last Friday, after
a long and painful illness. Mrs. Foster's
maiden name was llamas, a sister
of Mr. Thomas Haines, of Cherokee
county.
Mrs. Homer Bclue died at the home
of her husband at Lockhart last Friday
and the remains were buried at
Duck Pond Saturday. Mrs. Belue
was the daughter of Mr. W. M. Gallman.
Capt. R. VV. Scott who has been
suffering with his eyes for some
time is much better and he has hopes
now of his sight being restored.
Mr. Robert W. West, who lives 6
miles above Jonesville, is quite sick
and has been for sometime with cancer.
Mr. West is one of our very best
citizens and he has many friends who
sympathize with him in his sore affliction.
Rev. Mr. Mayes preached at the
Presbyterian church here Sundaynight.
/ Mr.
E. F. McWhirter returned S

week been at the bedside of her dau

Keys, who is very sick.
Mr. J. B. Foster, of Asbury

sick for some time has gone to Johns
I Hopkins, Baltimore, for treatment.
Mr. N. B. Eison who has the grip
and has been confined to his home for
some time is up and on the streets
again.
Re. W. II. Ariail filled his pulpit
here Sunday morning.

NEW HOl'E GLEANINGS.
The weather is so very changeable,
this morning (Monday) fire feels
very acceptable, and an overcoat is
not a bad companion to one out in an
automobile early this morning.
We farmers are behind in our planting,
but its a general complaint to
hear a farmer say he is so far behind,
but anything planted now as cold as
it is will not come up and if it was
up it would not do any good, possibly j
die. The trrain cmno

Rev. A rial filled his appointment
here yesterday and as usual preached
a fine sermon. We are always glad
to ge'ia chance to hear this able divine

.his being brother A rials last year to
serve us, we truly trust our Presiding
Elder will (rive Us one equally as good

Mrs. Lula Scott has been quite sick
n bed for a week, but is some better,
ler mother, Mrs. Little, was at her
icdside last Saturday and night.

to take a delight and pleasure in
waiting on them (the sick). They
are not scared to death to go around
in a sick room, maybe where some fatal
or contagious disease may be. Do
not be afraid or get scared to take
care of the sick and visit them. We
are commanded to do this, we none
know what fatal disease may overtake
some of us before we die, and
we would not want to see our friends
ana neignoors ana many times our
own kin people will shun you and not
visit you because some jack leg doctor
has said he has lung trouble.
Mrs. Ida Belue was at Mr. J. G.
Bishop's Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. John
Whitlock, Jr. dined at Mr. Bishop's
also.
Mr. Clarke Whitlock is visiting relatives
and friends at Oswego for a
few days.
Mr. C. W. Whitlock spent Sunday
night with his brother John at Duck
Pond.
We were glad to hear of so many
being at New Hope Sunday afternoon,
come friends we are glad to see
you and have you with us.
No doubt we could all be more sociable
and more neighborly. Why
your next door neighbor can get sick
and be sick a week and know nothing
about it at all. Why is such the
case? Ought it to be that way? We
are to selfish, too selfish.
Mr Editor, we will ask that you
announce in your columns your Sundays
and hours of worship at the
Jonesville Baptist church.
Our roads are getting in fine shape,
the gasoline scrapes are at work up
here now.
The Rocky Creek school closed last
I Friday night and all the pieces were
played nicely not a hitch was made.
The teacher and pupils deserve a lot
of credit for carrying it out so nicely.
We were sorry to hear of Mrs. B. B.
Belue's death, She, her husband, and
we used to go to school together at
Rocky Creek, when we were going
to school. Annie was a good girl,
always ready and willing to help in
any way she could. Bonier, you and
your little ones have our deepest sympathy,
I assure you. "Snake.'
