"Static Electricity." encounter their greatest difficulties Manufacturers of motion pictures from atmospheric conditions in the fall and spring, hile cloudiness, rain and fog contribute to the general setbacks, electricity is the most potential factor in retarding the development and photographing of pictures. Most Troublesome in Spring. The extreme prevalence of electricity in the air both in the spring and fall evolve for the manufacturer into troubles from static. The constantly varying air currents, transcending from warm to cold, and vice versa, are composed of widely diversified potentials, which are continually discharging small Quantities of static. All material of a celluloid composition, such as brass, steel, and particularly celluloid itself, which constitutes the base of a motion picture film, are highly charged with electricity and in their contact with other inanimate bodies, discharge from one to another. Whenever these discharges occur between the film and some one part of the many machines of brass or steel composition through which it is passed in the process of manufacture, before being developed and "fixed", the tiny flash of light incident to the discharge makes marks upon the film which so defaces it as to render it useless. Thousands of dollars worth of film annualy are destroyed because of siacic, tne tecnnicai term lor the transitory marks upon the pictures. The financial loss is also contributed to from other sources. Often many weeks of work, great expenditures of money and much study and attention are brought to naught simply because of the static imposed by inclement weather. No Solution Yet Found Scientists and engineers throughout the world have devoted years of study to the problem of eliminating loses from static. Thomas Edison and Nichola Tesla, two of the greatest men in the twentieth century science, have sought in vain for the solution of the problem. Tesla, universally acknowledged as the most conversant authority on static electriicity, and originator of the salientj principals in wifeless telegraph aVq|f telephone, has written an exhaustive treatise on the subject. Copies are listed the Franklin Institute of Electricity most often resultant in static is produced by friction in chemical action, and heat and mechanical motion. Amber, hard rubber, glass and celluloid and many other substances may be electrified, or given a change of electricity by rubbing them with silk or woolen cloth. In that condition they will attract various light bodies, such as paper and pit balls. Static electricity manifests itself principally in attraction and repulsion, and may be explained as a condition of strain or stress on ether. Sheriff Rector , and his deputies of Greenvile, made 133 arrests during me month of February. Over $1, 000 in fines was taken in on account of these arrests.?Newberry Observer. A negro 70 years of age is charged with criminally assaulting a negro girl of 12 years in Sumter county on Wednesday. He has made his escape.
