Kelton, S. C., Feb. 3.?We have had a great deal of rain the past two weeks, which has stopped all farm work and the public highways are getting in a very bad condition. Mrs. Charlie Broom died very suddenly last Wednesday at her home at Lockhart. She was buried at Mt. Joy church Friday in the presence of a very large congregation of sorrowing relatives and friends. She was a Miss Garner before her marriage, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Garner, who preceded her to the spirit world several years ago. She was a member of the Baptist church and left behind a husband, several children three brothers, too sisters and nmnv relatives nr>d friends who mourn the loss of a dear relative and friend, of whom all have the profound sympathy of the entire community. During the funeral of Mrs. Broom, which was conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. L. Hodges, assisted by Rev. F. E. Hodges, "Uncle Billie" Going, as he is called by most everybody, was very suddenly stricken down and for some time it was feared that the attack would prove fatal, but he revived and was carried to Union the next day, where he is receiving medical attention. His many friends all over the county wish for him a speedy recovery. Messrs. W. H., G. T., and I). J. Gault attended the big corn show last week at Columbia. They report it to be a grand exhibit of our great nation, too mucn to De taKen in by the average man in a day or two. The county chain pang has moved from its camping ground at Flat Rock church down to Mr. Thad Holcomb's. They had been in our community about one month and have done some good road work. Captain Lawson seems to be the right man in the right place, using good judgment toward those unfortunate men. He is a man with plenty of mercy but strictly enforcing the law in dealing with them. The day before they moved the citizens gave them a regular Pea Ridge cooked barbecue, which consisted of hog and 'possum, etc, for meat, loaf bread, pickles, which all seemed to enjoy the force, the convicts and the neighbors. We have seen some of those darkies eat, and some of us white ones did our part. Rev. F. E. Hodges preached to the convicts on the fourth Sunday eveni nit in Innnopv "'h " J Aiken's famous tourist hotel, the "Park in the Pines", burned down Sunday morning. The -14 guests escaped, but lost about everything they had in the hotel, amounting, it is said to more than twenty-five thousand dollars. The hotel, a three-story frame, belonged to Mrs. MacArthur of Detroit, Mich., and was built ten years ago at a cost of $160,000. Mr. and Mrs. Ushra Alman spent * the week-end at the home of Mr. J. A. Harris. Mr. W. S. Vaughan gave a pound supper Saturday night. The chain gang is in our community now. An old legro woman, who was staying in he house with Mrs. Connor and h?r laughter while Mr. Connor was in Columbia as a member of the legisature, was burned to death. G. Hall, 1 of Haylow, Ga. was lodged in jail at Stateville, today charged with having thrown a stick of dynamite into the home of his mother-in-law, Mrs. E. H. Cordell, at Haylow, and attempting to blow up the home and family, including his own wife. Hall is said to have gotten drunk Saturday night, and going to the home, lighted the fuse to a stick of dynamite and hurled it on the porch where Mrs. Cordell, Mrs. Hall and W. H. For two years he has been wearing long trousers and his fond parents are puzzled what to do with him because he outgrows his clothes before he outwears them. He is well developed and strong and weighs in the neighborhood of 200 pounds. Although normal at birth and when a child, within the past two years he has begun to sprout up to an enormous height and a special bed was constructed before he could obtain rest. Chicago, Feb., 3.?A former spy in the Confederate army, Joseph Armstrong, of 518 North Clark street, was arraigned before Judge Hopkins, in the South Clark street court, charged with begging c-* the streets. "I was a spy under General Lee," Armstrong testified. "I was in the uoniederate army all through the Civil war and took orders from General Lee in person." "'You're all right/' said Judge Hopkins.
