WHAT GEORGIA WOULD GOVERNO Augusta Chronicle Whatever may be one's individual opinion as to the truth or falsity of the multitudinous charges of misconduct and malfeasance in office?which come from many sources?against the governor of South Carolina, there is, perhaps, no one who can escape the very definite and painful impression that the good old state of South f';) r*r*1 i n u nroconfo u mncf Unmiliuf inr? ..." spectacle in having as her governor a man against whom so many and such serious charges can be brought. To say that the chief executive of a great state should be, like Caesar's wife above suspicion, is merely to say what everyone knows and feels ?and, certainly, Cole L. Blease has not so conducted himself as to be above suspicion. For instance, the charge has been made, not merely by Thomas B. Felder and the Burns detectives, but by the mayor of Charleston?a man in the very closest touch with the situation, and a former friend and supporter of Blease?that the governor of South Carolina appointed one Stothart as "chief constable" at Charleston, and ,that Stothart has systematic any collected "gran irom tne nquor dealers of that city, agreeing to give them "protection" in return for their monthly payments. And Charleston liquor dealers have confessed to buying this protection from Stothart? the governor's appointee. ( Now, this may or may not be true; and most men will doubt the credulity of any and all of the witnesses directly involved in these alleged trans-^ actions. But it is a serious charge; one that stems to be pretty well established, at least so far as Stothart is concerned?and yet the governor of South Carolina permits * Stothart ( to remain as "chief constable" at Charleston. The que^ion naturally folows?why ? At least one thing m certain; if Stothart really had authority from 1 the governor to levy "toll" on the ' Charleston liquor dealers, as charged ' then the governor dare not discharge him. For the obvious reason that he ' knows too much?and would tell. But if the governor is in no way involved in this Charleston scandal, he owes it to himself and to the dignity and honor of his state to dismiss Stothart summarily. Will he do it? It remains to be seen. But by his action, or non-action, he may be fairly judged in this particular matter. J And that, we confidently believe, is t what the good people of South Caro- < lina will do with Blease?provided the good people are not woefully in the minority in that state. < I Why He Did It. ] Some are twitting Judge Jones for resigning from the supreme court bench to run for governor and are ( askings why he did it.
