News From Jonesville.
Jone8ville, May 27.?Union has paid
a heavy death toll in the last few
days and it seems that others are
on the brink and will soon follow.
The closing of the graded school
came off here last Friday night. Six
of our young people graduated in the
10th grade, as follows: Frank Littlejohn,
Sam Littlejohn, Marie Jeter,
Elizabeth Littlejohn, Emmie Hames,
and Lila Black. Professor Hand, Who
is well known over the State, made
the address to the graduating class,
and it was a fine address. The class
acquitted themselves well. The year
has been a successful one with the
school, and the principal and assistants
are to be congratulated on the
progress made in the school room.
There was a good shower of rain
here Saturday evening, but it was
only partial. It suited the farmers
and was .much needed.
Mr. W. A. McWhirter, who has
been sick with rheumatism for some
time is much better.
Messrs. J. F. Alman and J. C.
Spears are both unwell and have been
confined to their homes.
Miss Mary Jenkins of Santuc is visiting
Misses Easter Palmer and Clara
Foster on Main street.
Miss Ernestine Harrison of Walnut
Grove is the guest of Miss Annie
Kelley on Main street.
Professor Henry A. Wise of Columbia
attended the commencement at
the graded school last Friday.
On account of sickness and expected
deaths in Union, Rev. L. M. Rice
did not reach his appointment at the
Baptist church here Sunday.
Mrs. A. B. Hames and Mrs. Caissie
McWhirter visited relatives near
West Springs last Saturday.

Miss Inez Spears who has been
teaching, is at home now for the summer
months.

and Barton, teachers in our
graded school, have all gone to their
homes for the vacation.
Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Herring, Mrs.
M. M. Lawson and their children ,all
of Columbia, visited relatives here
last week.
About two miles above Jonesville
a crosstie was placed on the Southern
railroad, evidently for the pur
pose of wrecking passenger train No.
10, due at Jonesville at 8:56. The pilot
of the engine struck the tie and
knocked it from the track, but it
came near causing a wreck, which
might have caused many deaths. Policeman
Jack McKissick is on hot
track of the rascal who put the tie
