The Construction and Use of an
44A" Level.
A frame made in the shape of the
letter "A," with a brace fastened
to the top by a leather binge, so the
"A" may be made to stand up like
an easel; a cheap plumb bob and
Rtring, and we are equipped with a
leveling instrument, which is sufficiently
accurate and is well adaptted
for constructing terraces, ditches,
or roads.
To make the A," select two
pieces of 3Mxl"xlG' lumber, bolt
them together at one end, sharpen the
other ends so that when folded, ,
the points will come together exactly.
Mark a straight line from the
point to the center of the bolt, and
on this line, about three feet from
the points, bore a I" hole through
the two pieces. Open out the sides
until the points are 16' 8" apart.
Bolt the cross arm on through the
holes which have been made, and
fasten the brace to the top.
In order to make the "A," drive
two pegs in the ground 10' 8" apart,
on which place the legs of the *'A,"
swing the plumb from the bolt at
the top; when it comes to rest, mark
the place where the string crosses
the arms. Change the legs of the
"A" on the pegs, turning end for
end, allow the plumb to come to
rest, marking the place on arm
where it crosses. Find the half-way
point between theso two marks and
mark it distinctly zero.
Select two pegs 1G' 8" apart, as
nearly on a lovel as possible and
place the "A" on them, driving one
down if necessary until the plumb
boh string falls on the zero mark.
Now elevate one end of the "A"
two inches and mark where string .
crosses arm and continue to elevate,
two inches at a time, marking the ?
place from the zero, 1, 2, 3, etc.
Then lx?gin at the other side and
mark it in like manner.
To use the "A" in terracing,
select points, on the ground where ^
the plumb line crosses the zero,
stepping from one to another.
The fall in inches between any cj
two places may be obtained by ja
stepping off the distance between u
tbem, and keeping a record of the
numbers where the line crosses the
arm, add them and multiply by
two, this will give you the difference
ill inches, provided, the slope has
all been in the same direction.
The rise or fall of a ditch or road p
is expressed directly in per cent, by
the marks on the arm.
The work cannot be done as rapidi
ly as an experienced instrument

has the advantage that it takes only ^

more quickly if allowed to swing in
a bucket of oil or water, placed on ^
