would he interesting to a number of c
your readers for me to write con- 1
cerning a trip to Beaufort frcm I
which I have just returned. It is a r
well known fact that Beaufort is one (
of the oldest settlements in' our I
State. On account of this fact there t
are many sights and scenes of \
peculiar interest to the visitor. The t
town is one in which the n$w and i
old, the Past and the Present are
represented in a very interesting t
way. In passing out of the beauti- t
ful harbor on the Beaufort river one I
sees the old Spanish fort erected ]
more than two hundred years ago. i
The front wall, which has now al- '
roost disappeared, is built very near i
the edge of the water, and it may be 1
easily imagined, that this fortress I
presented a formidable appearance i
in its day. 'Nothing now remains i
except a low wall which is made of i
material locally called "Tabbie." |
It is said that, the art of makiiifj! i
this material has been lost. A< few i
miles farther down the river, is the 1
U. 6. Naval Station which is now
practically abandoned. The Government,
it fs said, to have spent about
two millions of dollars at this place.

The Baptist church of Beaufort i
was built nearly one hundred years <
ago under the leadership of Dr. 1
Richard Fuller. The building is '
not without beauty. It is coin- i

, The St. Helena Episcopal church >
on account of its age is very interesting.
- It was founded and built two
hundred years ago. On a metal i
tublet at the front entrance the i
wprds, "Founded by act of Assembly
of Colonial Government, A. I).
1712," are inscribed. Inside the <
church is another table inscribed as
follows, "In memory of George
Gfilphin McMurphy, Adjutant of
Colonel Youngblood's regiment of
South Carolina State troops in war
of 1812." Another tablet gives the
names of quite a number of gallant
Confederate soldiers. Below their
names occurs the following sigok

nations." The ancient wall around
the church and burying ground wss *
built of brioks brought from En.;- 1
lajid. They are much larger in size '
than those that are made at presert. 1
The fine harbor of Beaufort dees 1
not seem to have the measure of
appreciation it deserves. The surrounding
country is very fertile and
truck-growing is said to be very 1
profitable.
