V . * ^ FOUR CHILDREN BURNED TO DEATH AT CAMPOBELLO Father Had Gone Out, Leaving Fire in Grate?Body off Victim Lands at Feet off Would-be Rescuer. Spartanburg, Jan. 29.?Four children were burned to death early today when fire destroyed the residence of Walter Gibson, a farmer, near Campobello, S. C., this county. The children were alone at the time. All the little victims were children of Mr. Gibson. The dead: Annie, aged 14. Hugh, aged 16. Launa, aged 10. James Gibson, aged 8. ? Gibson had gone away and it is thought left a grate fire burning in one of lower rooms. It is supposed the flames started from this. Neighbors discovered the fire too late to save any one. As one of the would-be rescuers entered the house the young child crashed through the ceiling and landed at his feet. The bodies were recovered ajter the fire had burned out. Came Near Being Killed. Mr. B. Berlin and two children came near meeting death at the Southern Railway crossing at Main street Saturday morning. He was attempting to drive a two-horse wagon over and a shifting engine was backing in a freight car. The car struck the wagon, demolishing one front wheel by forcing the mule and horse to one side one thus twisting the wagon tongue and throwing the occupants out of the wagon. One of the animals was knocked down, and for a time it seemed that there would he serious damagedone. By rare good fortune nothing was seriously hurt but the wagon. This is a dangnrous cross ing, and recently a flagman has been put on there.
