Rumored That Brother of McKinley
v Assassin Was in Canton Yester- i
day for That Purpose.
j
Canton, O., May 29.?Despite a
rumor of doubtful origin that Michael
Czolgoscz, a brother of the assassin
of President McKinley, would
k be in Canton today, the funeral of
.- Mrs. McKinley and the contingent
visiting of President R<x>sevelt passed
off without incident of sinister
note. Taking precautions against
the one chance in a thousand that |
the rumor of Czolgoscz's presence |
g here was true, the local police, as- I
d sisted by secret service men from 1
Washington and Cleveland, exer- I
cised the most alert vigilance during |
[ the president's stay in the city. No |
trace whatever was found of Czol- *
goscz nor any anarchist, although |
three strangers to the city were held p
11 in the jail during the president's i
stay. There was nothing against I
- them, however, and they were re- |
e leased this afternoon. That the po- |
lice were taking no chances was evi- *
lent by the precautions taken at the I
McKinley home. All friends and 1
e relatives of the McKinley family i
had to go to their carriages through
. the front door. Crowds had gathr
ered in front of the place, including
a number of men with cameras,
who wish to catch snap shots of the
president. The original plan had A
been changed, however, and while j
the crowd waited on north Market ^
street the presidential party was led f
out of the side door to carriages
" waiting on Louis street. The trip ?
? to the cemetery was made quietly A
and without incident and 15 min- ' t
utes ahead of the appointed time *
h the president reached his car. A I
large crowd had gathered and asked ^
\ for a speech, but the Drcsident men- A
- 1 y lifted his'hat and wished them a
"good luck." ^
