Exposition grows in interest i
daily. Vou will see how the vote |
now stands if you will look on page 1
one. Do not hold back your votes.
Let them come in now.
Spartanburg is discussing the advisability
of holding a county fair. ^
A number of well known men are
pushing the project, and it is safe I
to say Spartanburg will have a fair
if she wants it.
A "fat-witted" man is defined by.
Webster to be one that is dull. ^
stupid, wo nope tne commence-1
incut orators who will soon begin to i
pour forth their eloquent strains v
will not be "fat-witted." How'1
could we endure it through the hot
summer time? ^
One of the gratifying features of
. ii-i :
wui umium ij"? in iiir mi'i mat ?i*
an- adding new names to our list
daily. This enables us to give our "
advertisers a better advertising medium.
And every new name we are
adding in our contest is for one:
year, paid in advance. Thank you,
kind friends, one and all.
On July l'the pay of rural mail j
carriers is to 1m* increased from nine:
to twenty-live per cent., the increase
to be based upon the number of ^
miles traversed by carriers as shown
by the records of the department.
This, together with the appropriation
by Congress will involve an aggregate
of thirty-five million dollars
for rural service during the next i
fiscal year. (|
a
It is well that the pay of the rural s
carriers has heen increased. They/
were not paid enough for their work, i
Even now it is very poor pay for the 1
labor performed. ,
======== l*
The editor of The Times enjoyed v
a visit to Crecnwood during the"
state oratorical contest held thenlast
Friday. The speeches were of
a high order, the audience wan large it
and the weather was good. The
occasion was very enjoyable. The (
only thing that marred the occasion '
\A was the inadequate hotel accomodations.
Greenwood is easily reached
hy rail, and in that respect is just
J the place for the meeting. Jiut Col-;
1 urnhia would he equally as well lo-! |
cated, and would afford better hotel (
accommodations. We would l>e \
glad to see the contest held in Col- <"
umbia. '
It is to Ik- hoped that the delay in v
rendering a decision will be avoided !
in the future. The large audience i
went away half mad f??r the reason
that the decision was withheld ; some i
way to prevent the like occurrence
should be devised. It ought not to
take two days to get to the fa<H of
who the winners are. I
Buffalo Ball Game.
Buffalo, May 2.?One of the big
games of the season will be played on i
next Saturday against the strong!
Tueapau club. The game will l>e
played on the Buffalo grounds and a
special train will be run from Union
leaving at 3:30, returning immediately
after the game.
Tueapau will bring a strong aggregation,
made up of good players,
well taught in baseball tactis and
eager to carry back with them floating
banners. On the other hand
Buffalo will be present with the
goods. Coach Justus is rounding
his men in excellent shape and in a
recent interview with him, he spoke
a few words concerning the strength
of his team and the prospects. Hei
expects Buffalo to do "stunts" and
to win. Buffalo will be lined up as|
follows:?Justus (i. 3h, Willard ss,
Justus \V. 2b, or cf, Hinehart rf,1
Johns D. I'ettv 2h. Burns B_ If or
cf, Dr. Berry 11), Iaunh e, Harden
If or dh, Todd cf or If. The hiltiug
of this squad has undergone marked '
improvement and one of the special
features lies in the team work. As
to the fielding of the club it is safe
to say that it is far above the aver- i
age in that tin* entire team works as
one man and every play is gotten off |
with determination.
The game will Ik* started prompt- j
ly at 4:Id with Mr. Ben Townsend !
as umpire and Dr. Keller as scorer. !
Mr. Townsend is well known and in
every way a fair and impartial handler
of the indicator. He is quiek
and accurate in all of his decisions '
and Buffalo is indeed fortunate in
getting him to officiate. An extra
squad of policemen will be on hand j
to take care of any boisterous or ungentlemanly
spectators.
The citizens of Buffalo extend an
urgent invitation to Tnion and the i
uirrounding country to attend the
game. Nothing but clean and
sportsmanlike baseball will be tolerated,
so with the splendid clean*
record of the Tucapau club such a
game is a certainty and again, come'
uut and bring some one with you.
