An Old Soldier Pleajsed.
* ' S\
Editor Union Times':?Once a
soldier, I am much olated over
the prospective monuftient tliat
the ladies of Union propose to
erect to the memory oil the Confederate
soldiers. I suppose the
monument will stand as a symbol
for patriotism, also as a memento
to the ladies of Union who will
cause its erection, anfl whose
hearts overflowed with patriotism
while we were marching with Lee
and Jackson. We, the Confederate
soldiers of the early sixties, are
now living far in the afternoon of
life and will soon have to answer
our last roll call; we often dream
of the old camp fires and bloody
battlefields; seemingly we have
made our last fight and only one
cause would induce us to flv to
arms again, and that would be for
the protection of our noble ladies,
who could safely count on us till
| the last ditch, which would either
give us victory or a soldier's grave.
In honoring the Confederate soldiers
don't forget the deserving
daughter whose father went down
on the bloody battlefield: have her
present, permit her to assist in
the unveiling and all will be blest
without any petitions from here
below. All honor to the ladies of
Union and of our country. Without
them our victories would have
becn few. While our cause was
hist, our flag went down with honor.
Even our once enemies joined
hands with the world in praising
the record of the Confederate soldiers.
While thanking the noble
ladies of Union, I must not forget
the record of the old Union
rimes, which has bravely stood bv
us in war as well as in peace, and
without fear of contradiction. 1
don't blieve there is a house within
the borders that can be madfe
complete without a copy of the
dear old Times.
