A Memorable Day.
One of the days we remember with
pleasure, as well as with profit to our
health. is the one on which we became
acquainted with Dr. King's New Lite
Pills, the painless purifiers that cure
headache and biliousness, and keep the
bowels right. 25c at all druggists.
William J. Harley, of Ilarlcyville,
was shot and killed by C. C. Parler
Saturday night. Harley went to Parler's
house and was going into the
front door threatening to kill Parler.
It is said that Harley had been terrorizing
the community tor several years.
Why Suffer From Rheumatism.
Do you know that rheumatism can
be relieved? If you doubt this just try
one application of Chamberlain's Pain
Maim. It will make rest and sleep possible,
and that certainly means a great
deal to any one afflicted with rheumatism.

Policeman Woodhurst, of Abbeville,
was shot in the arm about n o'clock
Saturda> night. The attempted assassination
was at close range and came
near being successful.
The Charming Woman
is not necessarily one of perfect form
and features. Many a plain woman
who could never serve as an artist's
model possesses those rare qualities
that all the world admires: neatness,
clear eyes, clean smooth skin and that
sprightliness of step and action thai
accompany good health. A physicallj
weak woman is never attractive, not
even to herself. Electric Bitters restore
weak women, give strong nerves
bright eyes, smooth, velvety skin, beau,
tiful complexion. Guaranteed at al
drug stores; 50c.
A lire in Beaufort last Saturday re

The city had to be guarded by militia,
for fear of an uprising on the pari
of the colored people. At one o'clock
Sunday mo riling a negro, William Bennett,
was shot and killed by a guard.
J'his precipitated the trouble between
whites and blacks.

Transportation Exhibits. p
n
Norfolk, Va., Jan. 24. ? The word
"transportation" has in late years a
gained such a wide significance that un- Sl
der its caption volumes might be writ- P
ten. Until recently it referred princi- 0
pally to railroad and steamboat ser-,a
vice, but now it reaches from the upper 11
depths of areial navigation to the bottorn
of the sea, where the submarine w
boats disport with the denizens of the '
deep; from the Hying locomotive to 11
the trolley car, the automobile or the '
auto-cycle. Or front the handsomest l P
equipage in carriage or trap to the j y
broad-tired or ox cart of the burden-1P
bearing type. j
There was a time when the question 11
of rapid transportation was only dis-,1'
cussed in the great centers of civili- ^
zation or between those centers, but ?
now it is a question of deep interest
to everybody, and as the canal and w
the national pike have given way to; n
the modern steamer, the railway and \ ti
the automobile, so even the more recent
means and modes of transpor- i
tation will give place to the latest motive
power that really constitutes the ?
master-wheel to the mechanism of mov-! o
ing passengers and freight. i w
The incalculable vaule of an exhibit n
at the Jamestown exposition is be- w
1 coming more manifest every day as the
call for space continues to increase, 1
! and more particularly is this true in |e
the motive power department of trans- v
