That our American forests abound In
plants which possess the most valuable
medicinal virtues is abundantly attested
by scores of the most eminent medical
writers and teachers. Even the untutored
Indians had discovered the usefulness
of many native planus before the
advent of the white race. This information,
imparted freely to the whites, led
the latter to continue investigations until
to-day we have a rich assortment of most
valuable American medicinal roots.

As far as I'm concerned.
It's always chilly, more or less.
For people who can feel.

A large and Juicy meal.
And, worse than all, us 1 recall
From things that 1 have read.
There are no bakesliops In the land

Losses from Texas Fever.
^ I- - -- -irrir-Tin;'itltxie*'
stricted the market for the cattle
produced in this state. But in
recent years these parasites have
had a more serious effect and one
that is more generally felt.
Before the operation of the stock
law all our cattle were exposed to
ticks from the time of birth and all
acquired in this way a natural pro-!
teetion against Texas fever. But
after the passage of the stock law
conditions have greatly changed.
The cattle were all kept up. The
ticks disappeared from some plan-,
ations and the cattle raised on
hese places did not acquire the '
latural protection against Texas;1
ever. On other plantations the JI
icks continued to thrive and the."
attic became proof against the
lisease as under the old conditions, i
So that today we have some
daces infested with ticks and others'
hat are entirely free from the1
arasite.
VVl
.... ?t ww is taken from a tick-1
ee place to one where ticks exist j
lie develops Texas fever and
sually dies. If a town-raised cow
sent out to pasture on such a
lantation the same tiling usually
tppens, because town-raised cows
> not have an opjiortunity to aclire
immunity to the disease. If
cow is taken from one of the
?k-infestosted places to one of the
:k-free places, the cattle raised on
e latter place take the disease and
>st of them die.
In this way enormous losses are
Gained by cattle owners from
