MEETING ENDS IN GENERAL ROW.
Lively Times In the Cherokee County
Campaign?Knives Drawn.
But No One Hurt.
(laflfney, Aug. 1.?The ('herohec
county campaign meeting today at
Mayherry's mill broke up in a g< nI
oral row, although, strange to say.
no one was hurt. The trouble lias
caused no little excitement,
i While Hon. J. ('. < >tts, eandidate
for the State senate, was speak:
ing this afternoon, he referred to
the fact that he was an orphan,
when a man in the crowd, afterwards
said to be named Blackwood,
1 asked Mr. Otts when his parents
(died. Mr. Otts r? plied that his
father died when the speaker was
six years old, that he died of eon-:
! sumption in Florida. His qucs-, I
| tinner then asked if Mr. Otts' father
i had not taught a negro sehool.
i Mr. Otts denied this |>ositivoly.
Later in the afternoon, when Mr. ,
i Otts had concluded his speech,
! friends of his resented the imputation
implied in the question concerning
the elder Otts and a clash
| ensued between the friends of Otts
land the friends of the man Black- j
I wood who had asked the question. _
I There was a general tight in which
alsmt AO knives were drawn, and
hats and coats were promiscously
I slashed, hut no one was seriously
hurt. One man, hy the name of
i Fowler, is said to have pulled his
, pistol. One shot was fired, hut the j
weapon was knocked up in time to
deflect the htillet from the crowd,
and no other shots were fired.
This man Fowler is said to he from
I'nion county.
There was no more spending after |
the fight, though several of the J
|i;uuih,> riiiunuaics wure to nave
spoken. The sheriff ami other
! pence officers were on the grounds,
j but were unable, it is said, to make
i any arrests, except that Fowler was
j placed under arrest.
I The place, where the meeting
was held today, Mayherrv's mill,
, is about 1<> miles from (lafYney. It
is not supposed to be one of Mr.
Otts' strongholds, hut the course of
event proved that he had a number
of friends there ready to fight for
him if need be. The next campaign
meeting will l>e held Monday
at Timber Ridge, about 15 miles |
from here, but it is not thought
there will be further trouble.?The

Jonesville Young people Have Social.
- One most enjoyable social
j events of the season was the birthday
party given at the home of Mr.
R. R. Coleman on Pacolct street in
honor of his (laughter, Miss Pearl.
| The parlor was beautiful in its decorations
of pot plants and cut flows
ers, carnations being the most
^ prominent, filling the room with
their sweet fragrance.
The front. n\ay/a witK tr\fr,fn I
, |sion of vinos and Japanese lanterns,
j made quite a festive appearance.
, | The guests were received by Misses
j Hessie Fowler, Mary Dorrity, Ollie
| Lee Powell, and Leila Coleman,
I who showed their capability in entertaining
by seeing tl at everyone
3 was enjoying themselves, which
' t ley did to the utmost. Flinch
, a id other amusing games were inj
uulged in until a late hour.
;i i The games were interrupted only
J when refreshments were served,
3 which c insisted of ambrosia and its i
accompaniments.
Miss Pearl was the recipient of
many handsome and useful presents,
which speaks well for the popularity
of this very charming young i
,1 lady.
Miss Carrie Parrity delighted tinother
guests with iiiu?d<\
"A delightful time" w:i< the e\prsssion

the hospitality of this home on this
