Gemson Car Here?Lcctures by
Professors.
A good crowd assembled at the
court house last Friday afternoon to
hear the talks on agricultural subjects
by the C'hmson professors in
charge i?f the agricultural exhibit
car.
Prof. .1. N. Harper presided over
the meeting, and himself talked on
the subject of soil improvement.
He said that it was a matter of vi- i
tal importance that we put
plenty of vegetable matter in the
soil; it is necessary. He said that
crusts are formed on the surface after
rains la-cause the moisture, in
tin* process of evaporation brought
to the surface all the salt, soda and
potash in the land. This should
be broken up ami re-distributed in
the soil. Mr. Harper sai< 1 that the
little bacteria in the ground were
i rli<pe isabl<*, th:i they worked on
the vegetable matter and prepared
it for the consumption of the plant.
A further aeeount of the lectures
ami a description of the car will he
given in the next issue.
Death of Mrs. Dora Kirby.
Mrs. Dora Kirby died at her
home in South I'nion Tuesday afternoon
about "> o'clock. The day
U fore she was in her usual health j
and her death came as a great shock
to her familv and friends. On
M onday night she was taken sick
with indigestion. She took a dose
of laudanum. This, it is supposed,
failed to relieve her, and the dose
was repeated, perhaps more than
one time. When it did take effect
she went to sleep and never awoke,
Hut she did not go to sleep till after
daylight Tuesdav. She was a meat
sufferer from asthma and was accustomed
to take an opiate when an
attack came on. It is probable that ,
thus aeecustomcd to using the drug
she <liil not realize its danger. The
effect of the doses were, perhaps,
cumulative.
Mrs. Kirhy was >5years old, and
leaves seven sens, the youngest of
whom is Id years of age. She was
a good woman, a widow who for
several years struggled hard to rear
her children, most of them heing
quite young. She was a member
of Mt. Lebanon Baptist church, and
had been for ds years.
She was buried Wednesday at
J'utman church, Rev. L. M. Rice |
conducting the burial service*.
