Nature Study.
lly Mias Frances II. Whitinire, I'rinci-!
pal West End Graded School.
(Concluded from last week.)
We have studied a number of
wild flowers from specimens
gathered near our school house.
We have learned to know and
love these flowers; Hepatica, j
Anemone, Bluet, Jasmine, Sassa-1
fras and others. Each child was
given a specimen, whch he ob- j
served. We had a conversation
lesson in vyhich the child idea
was brought out in correct son-1
: tonces, the teacher calling attention
' to points unnoticed, and giving any
interesting information which she
knows, telling the legend of the
j flower if it has one.
The pupil's observations were j
formulated into eorrect composition ;
and placed upon the hoard for the j
children to copy in pen and ink. In i
this work, I endeavored to teach
neatness, good penmanship, cori
rect punctuation, capitalization and
paragraphing.
In connection with the lesson, we
learned some appropriate verse, or
read some little selection, thus interesting
the child in, and laying
I the foundation for future literary
study. Often the subject of the
drawing lesson, can bo taken from
the nature lesson. 1 have had pupils
to do some very pretty water j
colors from subjects thus chosen. I
Song love is so rich along this !
line that we find many rote songs j
! to give in harmony with this work,
i This spring we have sung, "Baby
! Buds." "The Day is Bright and
Suuny,"aml others of similarity.
1 promised each child who did
their written work nicely, to make
their papers into a booklet, with a!
' cover of drawing paper, upon which
1 shall paint some little water color!
design. These souvenirs will be |
highly prized by both parents and ;
pupils.
When the twigs were yet brown
I and apparently dead, 1 told the
children that if they would bring
me some switches, 1 would promise
not to use them in the regular way. j
Next day 1 got quite a selection. !
These, we placed in water, and set j
in a sunny window, separating the
(varieties. Every day or so, we
'changed the water, sometimes giv-'

The first bright days in March, 1
the children found the hepatica, ;
which they called "kitten tails," on 1
account of its fuzzy stems. 1 told j
them how the calyx of the flower '
i?rows to he the new leaf, and we 0
learned one of the sweet verses r
which have been written about this 1
wave little herald of spring. A
Then we studied the delicately, -j
icautiful wind flower with its pota- a
o like root. ; '
Next came the little bluet, which
hid child said reminded ldm of dear J tc
ittle babies. te
We have also watched the birds,
dked of their habits, and studied ; ^
veral specimens which came to
ur view; the robins, the blue-birds, j fo
nd several others.
Apart from other considerations, ^
ie uplifting and purification in, to
did thought is worth a great deal. 2m
