Considerable harm hns been done ' to the trnie of cabbage venders in J ibis section by foolish reports regard- A ing poisonous cabbgge snakes. State ' Entomologist Smith, of Georgia, says after i?.vestigation that the worm is ; entirely harmless. Ilis report, made in reply to a letter from B C. Smith, of Kibeiton, Ga., has therefore a direct locail interest. It is as fo'lows: During the past few weeks several j specimens of what is popularly ; known as the "cabbage situk*;" or . "hair worm" have been received at the oflice of the State Kt tomologi-t. j Mo4 of the parties set ding thesej specimens have inquired about t lie j poisonous properties of this little worm, and many of thrm have been under the impression that they wot.lj certainly be poisoned by eating cabbage infected wit it this worm. The numcrour reports received and specimens of worms found in some I Section of the State have tiei n the cause of i? juring ihe suit- of cabbage. ! Ouo of our correspondents, Mr. B. C. Smith, Elberton, Ob , writes: "The cnbbage industry will soon be ruined if the worm question is not soon satisfactorily settled." Many other quotations of a like nature cou'd he given here. For the past two years this question of the cabbage snake, which is supposed to be poisonous?has ariseu i and nearly every newspaper and agricultural j uirnal in th" country has had something to say cn this subject.N Most of them have reported truthfully that no foundation for the the reports of serious poisoning from eating this snake could be discovered. The writer wishes to state a few facts which will serve to clear up this | important question. Prof. F. H. Crittenden of the bureau of ontnmol??>\ United States Department of Agriculture, has issued a circular under date of May 17, lP"o. in which he asserts positively that the cabbage hair-worm is not poisonous The little hair-like worm whieli has been the cause of this almost universal scare is scientifically known as tnormis albicans.
