One morning several years ago two
young men?Turovtsuln and Pronski ?
were sittlug in Dronski's room in Warsaw,
Itusslan I'oluiul, bntetiing revo- ' 1
lutlon. Suddenly there wore footsteps j ,
on the stairs and In another moment 1
the door was thrown open and the p > ' ,
lice rushed in. Turovtsuin nodded f
toward Pronski ami the police arrest- | 1
ed him. Ah they *ere inking him i 1
away lie reproached Turovtsuin with 1
having betrayed him. whe.Vupon ill '
latter remarked coolly that there was I*
no l?etrayHl, slnee he was simply d >ia4 (
Ms duty as an officer in the secret 1;
service. Pronskl was sent i > Siberia, j
where, after Intolerable sufferings, lie :

Several years after Dronski's arrev,
while Turovtsuin. who was now chief i 1
of police la Russian Poland. was rl<l- ' (
Ing iu his carriage in Warsiiw. a man I |
tired a shot at hiui. At the moment a ,
girl who stood by the would he assis I !
siu knocked up the weapon and savel
Turovtsuln's life. Tlie man who fired ! t
the shot was spirited away h.v a renin- v
plices so quickly that the police did
not even Ret on his track. The chief ^
saw ihe whole afTair and directed that 'j
the Rirl be sent to his otliee. When j
she aiTived there he said to her:
"Von are n hrnvo girl to have inter- |
fere I with an assassin, and 1 owe you t
my life. What can I do to repay I
you?"
"1'iease. excellency. I would like to
serve the government." J,
"In what capacity?" t.
"In the secret service. 1 have many s
friends among the revolutionists, who 1
eou.sider l.ie one ol lit > I couM !'
loarn much of their pli. and report j
them to you."
"You shall have every opportunity. j
ami for every ru'olo you earn I will
pee that you are paid ton." t
The girl. who gave her name as j
Varonkn Arkn.lyevna. from that ino- i
luont enrolled in the secret police, i
where she served for a long while, often
1.ringing in information of the revolutionists.
There was a singular per- I
penality ahout her that fascinated j
Turovtsuin. At times he thought she
loved him. and at times she acted as
If she hated him. There are few men a
who will not he caught by such uncertainty.
Turovtsuin fell desperately
in love with her,
Varenka's bravery, too, was faseinatine
to her lover. She told him that
her real status was known to some of
her revolutionist friends, hut she did
not fear to go where they were, though
always armed to the teeth. One thing I
at last began to mystify Turovtsuin.
Though Yarenka often led the police
to capture some revolutionist, when
the force arrived the bird had always
flown.
Yarenka lived In first elass apartments
which were paid for by the government.
One day the chief appeared
at her apartments with trouble written
on his face.
"Sweetheart," ho saiil, "I have noticed
that we npvor gain anything
froiu Hip information you bring us. j
Evory meeting of revolutionists you
have told us of has for some reason
failed to take place. Besides, certain
persons whom we have Intended to arrest
have in some unaccountable way
been warned and have escaped us. And
now cornea one of our women in the *
secret service bureau who accuses you (
of being a revolutionist, of giving them (
all our secrets." *
"Who Is my accuser?" t
"Katia I'estsofY." I
Varenka grew a shade whiter. (Jo- ?
lag to number room she took a pistol j
from a drawer, put it in her bosom
and returning to her lover said:
"I may as well make a confession,
for Katia can prove her accusation."
"Groat heavens!" exclaimed Turovtsuln,
catching at the back of a chair
tor support.
"Ito you remember," Varenka went
<ou, "your bosom friend DronsklV"
"I do," gasped Turovtsuln.
"I nin Ids sister, I was far from him
at the time you betrayed and arrested
him, but I detenulncd that some day
I would avenge him. While he suf
fered the tortures you heaped upon
hint my resolution grew stronger.
When he died I determined to execute
o plan I had formed. The iuan who
fired at you was mv accomplice, and
there were twenty revolutionists standing
by to take him to safety. 1
knocked up his pistol on purpose to
win your confidence. Haviug won
from you ail I can for my people, the
moment of my supreme vengeance has
come."
People living on the floor below
heard a shot and came running up the
stairs to see what was the matter.
,Varenka stood at her door and asked
them if they had not heard a shot.
They replied that they had and that
the sound seemed to have come from
that floor, whereupon she said that It
sounded to her to have come from the
rear apartments. She spoke as calmly
as If she had been used to having shots
nreci near tier nil her life. The excited
people went to the rear apartments
to learn that nothing unusual
had occurred there. The occupants
were sure that the shot had come from
the front rooms. Puzzled, the crowd
went to Varenka's apartments and
knocked. There was no answer to
their summons. They eonferred, and.
all agreeing that something must be
.wrong, they decided to hurst open the
door. They did so, and stretched on
the floor Turovtsuin, the chief of police,
lay dead.
Varenka Arkndyevna was never seen
again In any part, of Russia, though
the police searched tho empire for her. >
Rumor says that she is living In Eug J
land on the large suras paid her by,
the police for her secret service work.
