Friday night the store house of Mr. Kl/.ie Kelly was broken into and several dollars worth of goods stolen. Soim-timo during the next day Mr. Kelly saw a new poeket knife in the hands or a negro hoy. He asked the boy where he got the knife. The boy replied that he bought it from Dool Kubanks. Mr. Kelly and Mr. (iallman eame to | t'nion Saturday afternoon and saw Kubanks, but Kubanks was inclined to dodge them and at last did get away from them. Mr. Kelly got a ' warrant from Magistrate Johnson, and the warrant was indorsed by the sheriff and sent to Mr. Joe Porter a constable, for the Kelton magistrate. Sunday, Mr. Parker arrested Kubanks and lodged him in the County jail. Mr. Kelly, will of course get other proof. Pool Kubanks is a negro who has served several terms on the chain gang, having been convicted of larceny. He once got away from the county chain trans near West Sorinirs. altho he was shot at several tines while making his escape. He was lucky enough not to get shot. The dance took place in the hall of the opera house and was a most delightful occasion. Carson's orchestra rendered excellent music. The German was led by Miss Marguerite Walker, of Wilmington, and Mr. S. C. DePass. The couples were: Miss Marguerite Walker with Mr. ('lough Arthur. ()nly two eases of much importance have been tried since the court , opened Monday. The case of W. ! W. Jones against the Western I'nion | Telegraph Company for two thousand dollars in the nature of punii tive damages for failure to deliver a ' telegraph message at the proper i time. Suit brought under the ! mental anguish statute. The verdict of the jury was for .3250 in favor of Jones. Y. K. DePass for plaintiff, S. (5. Finley for defendant. The next ease was I)r. W. A. Smith against the People's Supply Co. Dr. Smith claimed damages upon a warranty of soundness given hy Mr. States It. Crawford of a horse purchased hy Dr. Smith. The testimony showed that the horse was the individual property of Mr. Crawford and not the property of tin; People's Supply Co. The verdict of tin- jury was in favor of tin; People's Supply Co. The I'nion County Cotton Grow1 era Association with all other busii ness men of the county interested in a profit making cotton crop arc urged to meet next Monday, September 18th, at 12 o'clock in the court house. This is the day set aside by President E. D. Smith to consider the matter of 11 cents cotton, and it is most important that a representative attendance be present on that day. F. M. Fa mi, Prsehlent. \V. \V. Col ton, Secretary. Clifford Seminary Opening. The Clifford Seminary will begin its next session on tbe 27th of this month. It is expected that the attendance will be unusually large and there is every indication that the session will be a prosperous and eventful one. Many preparations arc being made for the reopening of the seminary and carpenters and painters have l?een engaged recently in making changes and improvements. The corps of instruction has been strengthened by tbe addition of M iss E. J. Johnson of M anassns, Va., who will till the chair of mathematics and science. The other members of the faculty are: Dr. I>. G. Clifford, metaphysics and Bible; Mrs. B. G. Clifford, ancient languages; Miss Amelia Cox, pedagogics and English; while Miss Marie Clifford will instruct in piano and violin, assisted by Miss Mamie Oetzel. The efficient housekeeper of the past session, Mrs. M. J. Blackwcll will return to officiate in her former capacity. The opening of the seminary is always an occasion of gratification and pleasure to I'nion, for this institution is a credit to the city in every way anu always adds much to the social and educational life of Union. Jug of Whiskey Seized. Bumh Thomas, a small negro lx>y, went to the. express oil ice and got a three-gallon jug of whiskey, and started home. I'oliccman Me| Kissiek seized the jug, and Bumh went home crying. Bumb is Cardoza Hampton's valet. '1 Cot Jon Warehouses Securtd Capt. F. M. Farr, president o the Union County Cotton Associn tion, as was stated last week, wa appointed by the association to se tho cotton mill presidents about al lowing the farmers to place thei cotton in the cotton mill warehouses He has seen the gentlemen an< they have most willingly conscnte* for the farmers to store their cottoi in the warehouses of the cottoi mills. There will be a cor tail number of vacant warehouses place* in the control of the association an* the association will appoint a mai to weigh, sample and give warehous receipts to those placing their cot ton in tho warehouses. Wheneve any person who has cotton in th Cnion or Buffalo cotton warehouse and wishes to sell he will notify th agent of association and also th cotton mills cotton buyer and giv the cotton mill buyer the preference that is, give the warehouse owner the first offer lxffore placing th cotton upon the market. If th cotton warehouse owner will giv the market price, of course he get the cotton. This will he done :i every warehouse. The storage pric will be a mere nominal one. Th association agent will attend to th insuring of all the cotton. Th president of the Aetna cotton mill regrets that he has no more wan houses at present than will heneccs sary in which to put the cotton < the company. It is not advisabl to store any new cotton for soni time yet. Next Monday all detail in th" warehouse matter will 1 a r ranged.
