Last Saturday evening a >oung negro man was killed by falling from the top of a freight ear about three fourths of a mile above Joncs* ville. The t'nion engine as it usually <loes every evening goes to Spartanburg with a cab and sometimes a few ears, and returns the same evening with a train of such ears as are at Spartanburg for Cnion and intermediate stations. This train last Saturday in going to Spartanburg, e insisted of an engine, one box ear fa ml caboose. It passed through Jonesville about 1 p. m.,-and made no stop at the s tat ion. Several people noticed the 5 ' train and saw a negro man on top of the Ihix ear and after the train passed the tank, those that saw the negro say lie. was lying on his huek with his lower legs hanging down over the edge of the ear, and .about half a mile north of the tank the negro fell from the ear and was discovered by the train crew, and the train stopped and backed to the negro and be was dead. The coro ner was phoned for and Sheriff Sanders phoned back to Magistrate; J. \V. Bates to hold an inquest, which he did yesterday. Magistrate Hates ordered the body of the j dead man carried to a house near by . . and kept over Saturnay night and the inquest was held yesterday morning, and.the verdict of jury ' f,\ was, that tin* deceased came to his death either by lining struck by the iron spout of the tank or by the fall from the .top of the box ear, or by both, as bis bead had a bad wound upon it. Mr. Rennold Owen who has been attending school at Cokesbury re- j turned home Saturday. ' (Hit worms are reported more here ( than ever known before. It is almost a waste of time to set out plants in the gardens, for they cut the plants terribly, and you can find them almost as freely as one can find earthworms. The river did not rise much last week, but a telegram predicting a big rise came, and all of the machinery at the dam on Neal Shoals was taken out of the water's way. Work was delayed only for a few days. A little rise elsewhere counts as a good big one when it gets to the dam. There has been a walk-way constructed across the swampy creek bottoms on the road leading from Santuc to Neal Shoals. That is "news," and now people can walk across without getting their feet wet or muddy, as they were wont to do for the last four years. Apple trees are becoming badly diseased, as the tender twigs arc dying hack from one to four inches. Some contend that it is caused by frost, hut the cold winter did not kill some of the very twigs that are dying now, and too, frost never l>ores a hole down the twig, and some began to die before the frost, so others contend that it is some insect pest, others that it is a fungus disease. I I went to tTnion 5th Saturday and Sunday to attend the Sunday School convention, to mingle with friends, to gain some information, to pick up some knowledge and to see. All of this I hope I accomplished. 1 was paid for my trip, and the time consumed. It will not, or may not be of interest to others to give the proceedings in detail, but suffice it to say the convention was interesting, especially to those who can l>e interested in such, and very instructive. It was a good meeting?enthusiastic?and the Sunday exercises drew a large crowd, all of the denominations of religion meeting at the First Baptist church, in which tho convention met, it l?eing the formal opening of she lniautiful edifice to worship. The delegates and visitors to the convention were very warmly entertained. I never saw hosts more enthusiastic in entertaining man itcic tiiUL 1'ifDt CIIU1CI1 congregation in entertaining their guests. As for myself, I cannot speak high enough of the cordial entertainment that I was a recipient of. I felt compelled to divide my i time, and the sum would not admit i of more divisions, and believe I could forget it. 1 was entertained while there by Mr. and Mrs. C. K. Lipscomb, Mr. and Mrs. W. II. Poole, Mrs. Mary Gilliam and Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Wilburn, with , several more outstanding invitations that I could not accept on account of time and room. I feel that 1 have many kind friends, both male and female, and some interesting young lady friends in Union, all of which I appreciate, and wish I had iime 10 hco more of them, hut time is short iind crowded and one must needs to hurry around. Oh yes, I enjoyed myself, and am very glad that 1 went there. 1 always look forward to having a fine time when I am preparing to take an outing at such places. Hey Dksvek.
