ra^iRKUT tried to find some

more especially now that he was to
succeed him as John Nason's legal adviser.
It was while perplexed with
the situation and trying to solve it that
it solved itself.
Frye was out, and Albert was, as he
had been for three days, thinking how
to escape, when a rod faced and rather

for Frye.

"What is your cose?" asked Alberf,
a little ninuscd at being taken for
Frye's partner.
"Waal, the facts are," replied Staples,
"I've had to sue a miserable whelp in
elf defense. I live in Hynpfjeld. Jt'*
a small place about ten miles out, an'
last spring I bought the good will,
stock in trade and all of n man by the
name of Hunt, who was in the meut
business. He signed a paper, too,
agreein' not to engage in the business'
in or within ten miles o' Lynnfleld for
a period o' five years, and a month agp
he opened a shop almost 'cross the
street from me and is cuttln' my
prices right and left."
"And you are bringing an action for
Droacn or contract .'" interposca Alport,
thinking to have a little fun at the
expense of bis caller.
"I'm a-suliV him for $10,000 damage,
If that's what you mean," replied the
belligerent Staples. "I won't get* it
all, bnt then, as your partner said, we
may get more than If we sued for less."
Albert smiled. "And so you are basing
your suit on this signed agreement,

as well stop just now, for you have no

Are you a fool ?" . ?
"Maybe I am," replied Albert, trying
hard to keep cool, "but I do not care j
to be told of it. Mr. Staples explained ?
his case to me, and I inadvertently told t
him that the agreement he held was of

For a few minutes the two looked at; *

I have spoken rather rudely, but you *

Albert flrmly. "The role of private *

yellow eyes. "Steal or starve?" - pi
"Neither," replied Albert defiantly. ?
"I'll go back to Sandgate and hoe corn e

Frye's arrogance melted, and as he si
turned and began to play with a paper {]

"Will 3-011 oblige me with tlio small J";

"or slinll I call again for it?" K
"And it wo part company now," mut- f

"If yon refer to your scheme to
blackmail John Nnson," replied Albert
resolutel3* and not mincing words, "I |*
am too ashamed to think I dCer lis- 1;
tened to 3*our proposals to even speak
of it."
It was a hard blow and made Frye |i
wince, for It was the first time he had
ever been openly tilled n villain, but
he made 110 nrotost. Instead, ho si- ?.
lently wrote n clteck for Albert's due (
nnd handed it to him.
"I nui much obliged, Mr. Frye. Good E
piopdnp. s'r." said Albert in a chilly y
tone, and putting on his bat he left K

In u week Albert had his office fitted {J
up, and then he presented' himself to
John Nasou, and nfter that he not only E
had all the responsibility thrust upon j.
him that lie was nble to lusume, but (
he no longer felt himself m the posl- i<
