The question ??l" tin* possible extension
of human life has recently had renewed
consideration by a l'.ritish scientist,
says Harper's Weekly. In a lecture
deli\ered before the !loyal College
of Physicians in London. Sir Hermann
Weber, M. 1 >.. 1*'. if. <\ Ipropounded
certain conclusions which lie bad arrived
nl as to the best means for prolonging
life, The main points in bis
advice were comprised in these prescriptions:
Moderation in eating, drinking and
physical Indulgence.
I'nre air out of the house and within.
The keeping of every organ of tlio
body as far as possible in constant
working order.
IkOgular exorcise every day in all
weathers, supplemented in many cases
by breathing movements and by walking
and climbing tours.
Doing to bed early and rising early
and restricting the time of sleep to
six or seven hours.
Daily baths or ablutions according to
individual conditions, cold <iv worm r?r
warm followed l?y cold.
Regular work and mental occupation.
Cultivation of placidity, cheerfulness
and hopefulness of mind.
Employment of llio great power of
the mind In controlling passions and

Strengthening the will In carryl"K

I SUBMARINE SIGNALING.
Government to 11>. Ll^lilniilpH
With now WIitIch* A;?ii:iratUH.
The experts who witnessed the recent
experiments in wireless submarine
signaling between New York and
Boston are so well pleased with the
results that the government will probably
equip many more of the lightships
with the submarine bells, provided
the owners of steamship lines
will put the supplementary apparatus
on their boats.
Universal adoption of the system
would greatly diminish the danger of
collision or running aground during
fogs, as it was demonstrated by tbe
recent tests that the warning sounds
from submerged bells could be heard
plainly for at least seven and a half
miles.
The system is as simple as it is ingenious.
From the sides of several
lightships near the Massachusetts
coast were lowered into the- sea bells
of peculiar make. They were of extra
heavy metal, but with much less
inside space than usual?more cylindrical
than bell shaped. The hummer
was worked by a chain running o\'er
the sides of the iigh'^ips.
The steam -hip .Ian s S. Whitney of
the Metropolitan line, on which the experiments
were made, was equipped
with two cylinders twenty inches in
diameter and twenty inches In depth.
These cylinders, one on the port and
one on the starboard side, are placed
lr.side tbe forward hold tightly against
the sheathing of tbe vessel under the
water line. They are tilled with water,
in which is a telephone transmitter.
ilto wires from which run to a re
CCIVIT III nil" pilOl IIOUSO.
The sound waves from tho boll travel
through the water, pass through the
sheathing ami are taken up hy tho water
in cylinders and up to the transmitter
through t!?e wires to the receiver
ahove. The cylinders are placed so far
forward that only when tho warning
hell is within a quarter of a point of
being "dead ahead" can the sound he
hoard l?y both port anl starboard receivers
in the idiot house.
In any oilier event the signal cornea
only through one of the receivers, and
a s\\ it eh indicating port and starboard
lights gives visible as well as audible
Indication of the direction of the
sound.
The identity of a fixed station from
whieh the signal is sent is established
hy eode. according to the intervals between
sounds.

Where Wives Are Pawned.
They have a curious way of utilizing
wives and daughters in some parts of .
India. If a man wants money he puts
these members of Ids establishment In
pawn, and his creditor detains them
until the debt Is discharged. The cus- ,
torn varies In different localities. In 1
Nellore the Yercalls pledge their
daughters to creditors, who may either
marry them or give them away, and
a man who 1ms to go to Jail deposits
bis wife witb another man of her tribe
until his return. In North Arcot unmarried
daughters are frequently
mortgaged and become the absolute
property of the mortgagee until liquldation.
