Yes and howdnssom) people would
be; they would be as pretty as a [their]

Autumn is coming on apace, sure and
soon will see 'the hectic Hush born alike
on the maple and sumac leaf.'
Possums, if let aloue will soon be fat
and good as there are a lot of muscadines
and persimmons, but the possums are
being "pulled" too soon, before they are
ripe.
Mr. Gilliam Harvey while cleanining
out a well on the Hick's place, recently
got a perch Qsh, as long as one's hand,
out of it. No one remembers ever putting
it in. I did not see the Qsh, but
was told this by a reliable man and the
lish would have been sent to Tan Times
otllce if they had thought of it.
Deputy Sheriff Vincent aud Mr. W.
W. Johnson were in Santuc Monday.
Mr. Vincent was serving jury summons.
I do not know how many he served here.
I know he got one or two I wish he
hadn't had to get.
I see that Sheriff Sanders is going to
close up Mr. W, O. Jeter's shop, soon,
and Mr. Sanders and Mr. Jeter are ilrm
friends. But let me explain. Both
men who work in the shop have been
summoned as jurors both for the same
week. As the sheriff had to serve these
summons, I say he is going to close up
the shop. Do you see into itV
I have a crow to pick with somebody,
or I may be picked myself (or talking
wrong. In my last letter, I told about
some young ladies from here visiting
over near Hebron; and some of the office
boys made me say Daniel Merritt,
when it was Miss Danie Merritt, but 1
put the Miss away off. Now she is not
a man named Daniel, but a young lady,
and I may as well face all danger, speak
out and say a pretty one, too. But
whore did you get that 1. Now I aua
not at all angry, for mistakes will be
made, and it may have been mine, but 1
hope not. No harm was done either
way, only it did not appear to best advantage,
as I wished it. That is all.
Seed time and harvest are gelling-to
be both on at the same time over on The
works on Neal's Shoals. Sund ry night
a man, at the hands of hi* comrade at
the gambling table, was sent into eternity.
About ten o'clock Sunday night a
man, Taylor McCombs, of Henrietta,
N. C., was shot to death by Hill Ash
burfc, also of North Carolina, or on tire
line of Georgia, (t is reported that they
had been gambling at some of the little
old buildlt gs stuck around and had
passed son)e shots at each other, then
McComb) went to a boarding house, was
sitting by the light working ou his pistol
when A8hurst came in and ordered him
to but it down, Ibe former remarking,
"if I have to, I will," laid it down and
walked out, but Asburst went around
the olhpt way, and meeting him, shot
lum twin), killing him- At this time
the murd'-rrr ?a still free and perhaps
those over there will put forth ni> effort
to capture him. The parties in the row
were both white men, one I hear being a
stone mason, who was the one killed,
the other one worked with the machinery.
Gambling and drinklug are froqi
' what we hear, a Sunday pastime over
there.
The colored Baptist Association was
in set&ion about one mite out from
Thursday to Sunday. A large number
>f delegates wih present, ar nearly a
,wicked coacli was unloaded here Thurelay
and afterwards nearly every day
'.rain, especially the down trains brought
in large numbers, until Sunday they outdid
their doing, and a*>outa hundred got
ff the early irorning train, and
also that many or more off tho down
wain. These I suppose wore Dot delegates
but visitors. From early in the
morning until high noon the roads pre ented
almost, a continuous string of vesicles
of every kind going to the church.
Some people say there were .'1,000 when
they passed the church, and others think
lieie must have beeu 5,000 there Sunday.
Dust was plentiful, the wind blew
March like, ana with so much travel,
one may be sure there was a cloud of
lust., and some unpleasantless became of
i. The colored folks had a big time at
Iris- meeting, and a big Sunday. They
ame from far and near.
Recently a negro man was Eliot in the
nead over at the dam, but this one only
.jauglit the lead that was sent on a misdon
for another buck, and that by a woman.
A woman was shooting at a mm
int. miociwl ??1
... ntuj, nun anoiuor one was lying
in his bed, all innocent, I suppose,
md caught the ball square in the top of
nis head. He was not however, badly
injured. Constable Johns was sent over
after the woman, but she gave him the
dodge. She may be oue of those worthless
incubus*?a loafing vagrant wh.? has
been run from some city to keep off the
cbaingang.
Cotton is openitig fast, but the very
best progress is not being made gathering
it. The crop is short and on that
farmers are disappointed, or rather
down, as thev have been expecting it,
md they are gettiug a little blue over
the downward tendency of the price.
The factories and so-called big men
may say what they please about a
big or full crop being made, but if it
coines as near the reports, otherwise,
of a short crop as Union County is,
the farmers will need a good price to
be able to pull through. I wish it
was so farmers could, and they would,
oease selling as soon as it went below
ten cents. I have heard that a factory
president at Union offered to
bet that a bigger crop of cotton was
Deing made in Urnon County than
9ver was made before. If he judged
from viewing tho crops that I have
leen, and really believes it, he hasn't
jot cotton sense sure. But his opinion
or saying will have the desired
effect. But I hope the home factories
are not putting their fingors in
tho price lowering pio. If so, I do
hope cotton producers everywhere
.muld find something else and not
nnke one fourth as muoh cotton for
rhe factories to get rich on, and keep
building others on.

hock hart function News,
The weather has been cool and
fair and the farmers are moving
iround and hustling to gather up
their crops. There has been a great
deal of hay and other feed stuff saved.
The mowers have been putting in full
time while the sun shine3.
This witer attended Children's
Day services the 26th of September
at the place known as the Mabry
school house in Jonesvillo Township.
This was a delightful occasion.
The services were conducted
by Rev. Mr. Neal and Mr. C. M.
uault who acted as chairman. Eaoh
little girl and boy did his or her
part well. There wore many little
epeechos made. Too much cannot
be said about this occasion. In connection
with this, they had a picnic
and every one was served and
,plenty left. That is where they hold
Sunday school every Sunday and
these good people arc doing a good
work in training the young people
for future life. I will quit this
subject for some one else may say
something about this occasion.
