The Hditor,
ETTA JANE. August 24.?-We
are having fine growing weather
now anil our crops arc doing well in
most instances. Tha creeks and
rivers have overllowcd the lowlands
and the corn and hay are drowned
on*. Cotton is generally well fi led
and we have heard no complaints
about it as yet.
The saUagc company is still at
Skull Shoals taking out and drying
cotton.
The Skull Shoals lhiptist Congregation
will begin rebuilding their
church soon. It will be erected on
or near the spot where the present
one stands.
Prof. Thomas Moore is building a
house on his land on Thicket Creek.
We are glad to welcome Mr. Moire
and his family back to his old horte,
and are glail to know that ho expects
to make this his permanent home.
Dr. L. 11. Black will build on the
road leading from Owen's ford to
Star Farm near the former place.
Just now the indications ure that
much of our deaorted land? will be
occupied with a better class of neighbors
than heretofore.
Mr. Don G. Gallman has the contract
for carrying the mail from
1 Union to this place.
Mr. T. ?J. Kates has had A lick
Stonoy, colored, rewalling his well.
There is whooping cough on the
York side of Broad liver and sotno
on this side.
Sotnc ball players from the Union
side of Pacolef river came over Saturday
to play with the Gowdeyaville
boys. \Vc haven't heard how they
came out yet.
I am reminded of an incident
about Mr. Stokes who was perhaps
80 years old. I will relate: lie
wrote a first rate copy hand and
one day I said to him. "Ynn writ* n
very steady hand for a man of your
age*" "Yes," said he, I am always
sober."
Mr. W. It. Walker is at his old
home at Sunnysidc resting for a
short time, lie is always busy and
his friends are glad to see him. He
is a high toned public spirited man
who is worth something to his
country.
