Of Interest to Farmers.
] Special to The Times.
Jonesville, S. C., July '28, 1900.
Mr. Editor:
/ Last Tuesday morning Col. J. S.
r Newman, Director of tho Agricul.
tural Department o/ClemsonCollege.
Prof. \V\ S. Morrison, who 1ms charge
? of tho Department of History, and
Prof. C. (> Upton, in charge of D.ii*
' ryiDg and Animal Husbandry, held a
Farmer's Institute in Joncsvilio.
Col. Newman gave tho farmers edvicc
about tho preparation of tho soil and
cultivation of several important
i crops. Ho said :
, "The soil should receive tho deep
i plowing in the full when the land is
i dry, and corn and cotton ought not
i to be plowed deeper than two inches
} after tlie plitnt gets twelvo inches
i high. This mode of ploughing cuts
. on the irrass and does not rftnlnrha
3 tho roots of tho plant.
> One ncro of well prepared Bermuda
, grass is worth uny two of alfalfa
i' or bluo grass unywhero in the
United Stules.
, Fall cabbage may bo planted any
1 time from September until November
3 but tho bud should rest, on the
, ground thus protecting tho stem
f from the cold and cut worms. The
worms would then cut the leaves and
- nol the stems." Those nro a few of
l tlie suggestions offered by this vete
eran agriculturist who says,his life
s bus been divided ihto periods of eight,
i years experimenting in Alabama,
(Jeorgia a?>d South Carolina, although
e this distinguished educator comes
I from Virginia and typifies the ideal
t gentleman of the Old Dominion.
n L'rof. Upton told us that Dairying
o is a paying business and needs en
i conrajjemorir, as no part ox tho covint
try offers such u variety of forage
i- crops useful to dairying as the Boutlx.

a producer of more milk not so rich,
as Its per cent, is only three.
Children should drink a great de?l
of milk.
One acre of Bermuda grass will
keep three cows.
i'rof. Morrison is a delightful
speaker and has the hannv art ol
holding his audience ev?-n wheu they
are feeling the pangs of hunger, He
made several pleasing remarks about
Jonesville and its up-to-date hosiery
work, llo mentioned the fact that
Union county had sent only three
students to Clemson College last
year. Among many other facts lie
told the farmers that in no year since
Clemson has been in operation h- s
there been under forty per cent, o'
its students fanner's sons an-1 t henumber
of farmer's sons there has
been as high as sixty nine per cci t
He says more boys go back to the
farm than to any other profession.
Next to the Agricultural student*
cotnes the number who take the
course in Electrical Engineering
LJrdf. Morrison feels that Clemson
College is doing the work that is so
much needed. In a class of sixty
this year, thirty of the young men
had received positions before they
got their diplomas, and some of these
young men are now drawing larger
salaries than their Professors who
taught them.
These facts go to prove that the
man with the practical, tefehnicu!
training is the one who is in demand,
and will receive the pay.
Prof, Morrison is the gifted nephew
of South Carolina's notable son and
educator, i)r. James II. Carlisle, ami
hoisabrolhir of the teacher who
died in Union some years ago.
