Mention is mado by our Jonesville

meeting to be held at the Baptist
church at Jonesville on the 21st of
this month. Prof. Newman of Clemson
College i9 to be the speaker of
the occasion.
"The morality of the young men
of this country Is just as high as the
young women demand," said a minister
recently in Chicago, and this is
true of every community in the
United States. The young women of
any town, city or neighborhood can
fix the standard of morality for the
young men and just in proportion to
their indifference and leniency on
the score of morality will the young
men indulge in questionable practices
and immoral tendencies. Card playing
and wine drinking among young
men in nine cas:-s out of ten comes
from their association with young
ladies who look with favor upon these
steps towards other and graver
onecces against tbe moral law.?

A Small Fire.

tools at the Hardware Factory was

to have been set on the by a white boy,
living at Buffalo. A
white man, also a colored woman said
that the boy set Ore to Hie bouse. It Is

for the boy's apprehension and a deputy
sent after hitn Thursday morning.

Too Thinly Settled.
Mr. Brown, inspector for the government
in establishing rural free
delivery routes, was in Union this
week. He wont over two routes, one
out to Meador and Santuc, the oilier
out to West Springs and through
Bogansville township. Mr. Brown
rejected both routes on the ground
that they were too thinly populated,
and in consequcuco would not pay.
Dentil of Mr. foil is A. Schoppaul.
Mr. Louis 'Schoppaul died Tuesday,
July 14th, at hi3 home in Union.
Ho had been sick for about two weeks.
A fewT days before his death he was
thought to be getting better, but
suddenly took a turn for the worse.
He leaves n wife and one little child,
five sisters and a brother in his immediate
family: Miss Mao Schoppaul;
Mrs. Swink, Mrs. Murrali, Mrs.
Milling, Mrs. Scofield and Mr. Jas.
Schoppaul. Mr. Sehoppaul has been
in quite poor health for some time,
being afflicted with paralysis of the
lower limbs. A few years ago he
married Miss Lillie Lee of 'Union
county. He was born in 1870 in the
rooms in the rear of Mr. J. T. Sexton's
store. r
Clean Up.
The hot summer timo is in full
blast. The time for fevers of malignant
type to put in an appearance is
at hand. Union is naturally a healthful
town. Up to this time there has
been this year a remarkably healthful
season. Now is a good time to
clean up all rubbish and have it carted
away or burned un. This is a
splendid season to whitewash'fences
and out houses and to scatter limo.
A dollar barrel of lime scattered
about your houses may save you a
hundred dollars in doctor's bills.
Besides all this, a man owes it to
himself and his neighbors to keep
his preinlsos clean. If a man will
not clear up, the health officers should
handle him. Every self-respecting
citizen would commend thein in the
enforcement of the law.
No Pity Shown.
"For years fate was after me continuously,"
writes P. A. (iullcdge, Verbena,
Ala. "I had a terrible case of piles,
causing 24 tumors. Whep all failed
Ducklen's Arnica Salvo cured me."

Locally, there was excessive prcci

daily-excessive rains from the S.ivnn

in western Sumter. In this part o
the State the rainfnll amounted t<
from !) to over G inches. The arei
includes the region of heaviest rait
fall during Juno, when it amountei

in other parts were beneficial, an<
some places in the northern parts art
in need of more rain. The week'i

considerable progress, especially ii
the western counties.
With the exception of a number o
localities that report tho contrary
old corn is a fair crop and is abou

corn was destroyed on low landi

Young corn has a good eolejfc uoi

There was a general improvemen
in cotton, though some section
failed to share it, but reports fron
most sections indicate that the plant:
