K. Foster Tuesday afternoon. A wl large oak was cut and several pounds of hmey extracted. Though there was tht not bo very much honey secured, the excitement and entertainment were all that R< could be desired. It is fun to cut into the house of a twarra of wild bees. ve The trees along Main street have all ^ been removed. Our friends from the country will hardly know us when they Wl come again. The water melon wagons no will miss ihe shade trees. So, also, will the watermelon eaters. But the removal of the trees is quite a gain in the ( matter of appearance. Main Street has af{ a business like appearance that befoie ? \ was lacking. bo av Mr. W. C. A petition asking the railroad commissioners to compel the Southern railroad to give us a better passenger depot for Union was circulated this week. Tub Timh8 editor gladly signed the doc- . It is a move injthe right direction. The 1 present structure is altogether out of " keeping with (he new life and progress of our town. We hope all our leading i business men will sign the petition, ana ) that soon we shall see a different state of > affairs at the! railroad station. We . have but one railroad here and that fact r shouM make the railroad authorities I ashamed to give us such poor accomodat tioDS. They get all the benefit from s freight aud passenger traffic, and should - be willing to do a better part by the public. ? A Prosperious Colored School. C. H. Jones, the principal of the :olored graded school here, has boen ap>oiuted financial ?ge..t. for the Clintoo formal and Industrial Institute located it llock Hill, S. (X This school Is under the auspices ol he Zion A. M. E. Church and needs >5,000 to be able to meet the requirenents of its rapidly increasing enrollment, having passrd the Ave hundred mark in the last school term. Unlike aoet solicitors for school funds, Jones ro poses to canvass among the generous carted people of the South, as they ave always responded liberally to the eeds and necessities of colored churches rd schools. We wish him success in this Held and elieve Union, his home, will give him s creditable a contribution as any town f its size in the State. Startling Evidence. We hope the antlioiities of Union and Cherokee counties will see their way clear to replace the bridges at Skull Shoals and Grindall Shoals which were swept away by the high water. These were great conveniences to the neighboring counties as well as the general traveling public, and their displacement is a great inconvenieuce. Mr. T. Jeff Hughes passed here this a. m , going into York county hunting up a load of chickens and eggs for the Union market. The loss of the bridges over 1'acolet is a great hindrance to him in his work.
