The Columbia Reunion.
Etta Jaxic, May 18.?My '.ast letter |
ras written from Columbia dtuing the I

ud I would be glad to take our readers

.8 lias been said before, our capital city

rcessary for me to say in >ro al ong tbat
lie. Everybody is full of praise for
o'.unibia and its poople. The addresses
! welcome from the various officers of
le city, State and veteran organizations
i well as lady societies mads us feel
ce and easy as well as to anticipate a
lightful time, and our apprehensions
ere abundantly verified.
The meeting of hundreds of old
ildiers who have not seen each other in
lirty-seveu years or parhaps longer ,
ade it a veritable reunion, and all the
lore a pleasant one. Old memories
ere rtvived and days gone by were redled.
Not only was this the case with
c-soldiers of our own State, but with
hers too who hod com? to take port
i the reunion and receive a South Carona
welcome. To show what pleasant
irprises were in store, I will quote a
ttle incident as one sample among a
lousand others:
Major Wells, of M.osley's command,
as recogn'zed by a M ississippian w hen
le two met on Main street near Wright's
Lotel: "How do you do MajorV"
?ked the Mississippian. "Pretty well,
lank you. IIow are you and, who are
ouV" returned the othor. "lam Wil
am B.own of the G.h Mississippi ltegt.
'he last time I saw you I was at Seven
'irres and about a3 near deal as I ever
xpcct to bo till I g > hones. 1 was badly
rounded--shot through ths lungs. You
ave me your canteen and I emptied it
or you. You, I think, were the only
oan in the ConfeJerate army who had
Dy whiskey a*, tli.it time, and I feol
uite sure you saved my life." At this
he Major took his quondam comrade bj
he arm and the two marched off down
he street as if tiny were going to reelebrate
the Seven Pines battle incident.
Comrade Sergt. A. G. Bjntley had the
ileasure of meeting some of his old comiany
there he had not seon since Lee's
iurreuder. Two of them were brothers,
ihd jast as ranch alike as two black eyed
leas. Ile^ave mo an introduction to
iach and I thotlghti. a nti?.ake
and introduced me'to the same man
,wice.
Miss Cornelia Greer, the beautiful
laughter of Judge Greer, was rponror
'or Camp Giles, No. 10S, and her sister,
Miss Mary Greer, was Maid of IIoi o \
Miss Christine Goudelock was Sponsor
ior Camp Jeffries, No. 889, with Miss
Louise, daughter, of the late Capt.
John R. Jeffries, as Maid of Honor.
Df these we are proud.
Mr. John W. McGowan, of Carlisle,
svas there too with his brother. He
made repeated efforts to fii.d some of
lis army comrades. He was a memler
>f Capt. W. Ii. DePass ' company. G. P. |
liattery, Gight Artillery.
The children of the Graded Schools of
Columbia made quite a display, and
virtually captured the conventior.
rhero were on the stage 80 little girls
Iressed in white with red sashes, and
ibout the eame number of little boys,
rheir ages would range from G to 10
i ears, perhaps. They \teiformed their
ivork and for half an hour, at least, held
ilie large audience spell bound.
The first night of the convention Miss
Lizzie Lumpkin*, a highly cultured and
reautiful you^g lady, made an address
>f welcome in behalf of the Daughters
>f the Confederacy.
