Presiding Elder J. W. Kil&o.
Rev. J. W. Kilgo, P. E., preached at
the First Methodist church Sunday morning
from the text, "I am the vine, ye
are the branches." The sermon was
very interesting and instructive. He
showed that the branches could not exist
or bear fruit without the vine, neither
can we bear fruit without Christ is with
as. That the quality of the fruit is of
the vine and not of the branches, sn also
the fruit or works of the christian is not
of the man lut of Christ in him, as
Paul said though I am dead I live, yet
not I but Christ liveth in me. lie drew
a beautiful word picture of the wonderful
power of love, the love that is satisfied
with nothing less than one's all. The
trna fruit that which is best and most
enduring is love. It was because God
so loved the world that he sent Christ,
his only son, from heaven to this sinwArM

The Work of Friday
Morning's Storm.
Another severe wind storm accompa.
nied with rain, thunder and lightning
visited this section again early Friday
morning. The storm began about four
and lasted till after five o'clock. While
there was no damage of (jonsequence
done to buildings in the immediate vicindnlty
of Union many houses leaked
badly on account of the blowing rain.
The storm hit Mr. Banks Fowler, a
mile this side of Jonosville, a pretty
severe lick. It blew down aid wrecked
ten out houses for him and blew his
barn off tty^illows and tarleted it badly
but did not wreck it. Tlii hardest of
the wind seemed to be collided to a narrow
strip or path.
Several houses were blown down and
a number of cattle killed on the Dave
Gist place in Bogansville section.
Several'pine trees around the yarji of
Charley Fant's place, just above Lockbart
Junction, were blown town. It is
a very dangerous thing to allow tall pines
to stand near ar residence. They should
beewtdown without delay.$467-'

Broke Into * Box Cmr.
Oh lut Tuesday night a negio
named Clayton Wallaoe, about 15
year* of age broke into a freight box
car-standing on the tiding near the
power hous*, and opened a box of
cheese and a box of smokiag tobacco
and tried to get into a caddy of chew*
ing tobacco, but gave it np. He cut
out about a three pound chunk of
cheese and took two packages of smoking
tobacco and then laid for the
night passenger train; when it arrived
he mounted the blind end of the mail
car and was goiog to sift the sands of
Union from his leet, but one of our
lynx-eyed police spied him and pulled
him.
Upon noticing the bulging appearance
of his coat he made a search and
found the cheese and tobacco. The
negro made a clean breast of the whole
business there and then, the afent
was sent for and the car was visited
and the story verified in part. The
negro claimed that a white boy named
Jack Johns had led him into the act,
hv nrnnnttnv that tK?* mk ika m?
for something to eat and go off on a
hobo expedition. The white boy was
not found until tho next morning. He
is about 20 years old and is considered
a vagarant.
The nogro was tried Wednesday
morniDg and fined for trying to steal
a ride on the train, for vagrancy ai d
for theft, and sentenced to serve 90
days on the chain gang.
The white boy was tried ThoTslay
morning and found guilty of vagrancy
and theft, and was sentenced to
pay $50 or work 60 days on the gang.
They are both pretty hard characters.
The negro, after his sentenoe was an?
nounoed by the Mayor, said: "Can't
I have my cheese now, boas."
After they serve their sentenoe the
railroad will probably take hold of
them, and they will likely land in the
penitentiary. *

Letter to Mayor Young,
Union, S, C,
Dear Sir: You are interested in the
prosperity of your town, and every doiiaa
