after having defeated them in a fight

The legulars were caught in a trap,

Venezuelan Muddle.
Berlin, Feb. 3.?The German ambassador
at J-ondon, Count Wolff o-Metternicli,
in a dispatch to his government
referring to British opinion on. the
Venezuelan question and the British
cabinet's altitude in consequence
thereof says the government is conscious
of the lack of popular support
In Its associations with Germany, especially
of the disapproval of the middle
classes.
Premier Balfour and Foreign. Minister
T.unsdowne have the support of
the other meniWrs of the cabinet in
their determination to carry the agreement
out with Germany, but the ambassador
ventures the opinion that
Lord Lansdowne's position is weakene<t
through loss of public support and
that the cabinet is in a mood to accept
almost, any way out of the Venezuelan
entanglement that promises the
u inmate payment or tho claims.
Ambassador Wolff-Metlbernlch also
says a very genuine dislike exists generally
in Great Britain to the government's
partnership with Germany and
in consenting to the negotiations at
V/ashington, he intimates that if tho
situation becomes more confused It is
conceivable' that Colonial Secretary
Ohambeilaln on his return from South
Africa may become the interpreter of
the popular view in the cabinet and
advise the other ministers accordingly.

Pilgrim-Baltazzi, German charge d'affaires
in Caracas, when the present
Venezuela imbroglio began, who reached
this port yesterday, said in the
course of an interview that Venezuela
should easily ho able to pay tho allies
30 and France 13 per cent of "the
customs receipts, besides providing for
her own administration excuses and
other obligations. A moderate estimate
of her yearly income lie placed at
about $10,000,000.
He declared that Germany had not
boon tho aggressor, and that trouble
at Foit San Carlos was almost a comic
opera episode. The Panther, he
said, is a small vessel, and while
blockading off Maraeaibo "she found
the water inside tho liar so rough that
she went closer ashore to iret out. of
tho choppy sens, when she was fired
upon by the fort. She replied with
a'KHit 18 shots, and going closer for
better range, found herself In dangerous
shoal water and withdrew. This Was
claimed to he a great victory by the

fort was then destroyed as a lesson to
Venezuela.

Now Orleans, Feb. 3.?President Irving,
of the United. Fruit company's
Breakwater, direct from Puerto Cortez,
reports that Americans are fleeing
from Spanish Honduras in expectancy
of a revolution which has been brewing
in that republic for the past two
months on account of the refusal of
President Siena, the present Incumbent,
to surrender the presidential
scat to Senor Bonllla, who, the reports
say, has been ofllclally elected the
successor of Senor Sierra.
President-elect Bonllla was expected
to be inaugurated last Sunday, but
the Breakwater left Puerto Cortez too
6oon to see the expected declaration
of hostilities. President Sierra ha^
been Honduras' chief executive for
the past few years, but last fall an election
for president was held. Among
the candidates were President Sierra,
Senor Bonllla and Dr. Soto. Several
days were required to get up the
official count, which showed that Senor
Bonllla had received 46,000 votes
according to his version. President
Sierra and Dr. Soto contested the election,
and, asserted, that fraud had been
used in the supposed election of Senor
Bonilla. The allegation was made
that thero are but 50,900 voters in the
.entire republic and that it was impossible
for any candidate to poll the total,
lienor Bonilla claimed.
Sierra contends that he Is president,
while Bonllla says ho Is the official
head of the republic. Sierra represents
the Conservatives and Bonilla
the Tdberals. Both have a big following
and propose declaring war If one
or the other is not seated. The Con
scvrvatlves are making secret preparations
for the fight. Bondlla also has
been active ami is fully prepared to
put up a hard struggle with troops
under President Sierra.

in Honduras, growing out of
the recent presidential elections. in
that territory, certain I

from anticipated damages to
their properties.
Bonilla, who was elected to the pres.
ldency of the country, lias taken refuge
in Am&lapala island, where he is
organizing a force to displace the incumbent
presideqj. who refuses to surrender
the reins of power. The turmoil
resulting in trouble is reported
from that country. -The navy department
upon notice from the state
department, is about to despatch the
Boston, or perhaps the New York, from
San Francisco down the west coast of
Amalapala.

Conductor Meets Horrible Fate on Baltimore
and Ohio Railroad.
Akron, O., Feb. 3.- work train,
running 40 miles an hour, on the Baltimore
and Ohio railroad, collided with
a caboose and some coal cars that had
broken away from another freight
train early today. The caboose was

Mexicans Assassinate 8hipper and His
Teamster In Arizona.
Phoenix. Ariz., Feb. 3.?Charles P.
Jod-dart, a well known shipper, and
his teamster, Frank Cox. have been
assassinated in a cabin at Ooddart
station. HO miles north of Phoenix, by
unknown Mexicans.
Revenge, It Is thought, prompted the
crime. Posses have loft in search of
the assassins.

Spartanburg, S. C.. Feb. 3.?The
chief interest yortorday centered in
the salo of the Morgan iron works.

property was bid In by W. S. Montgomery
and otters for S16.400. Thin

by the equity court by which the prop,

bidder, on saie day in February. Mr.
Montgomery is a prominent mill man
