Another Post OfRce Robbery.
At 3 o'clock last Saturday morning
the safe at the post cflico at Greets was
blown open with nitro-glycerine ar.d
$.'500 wo?th of stamps and $75 in money
was stolen. The explosion was terrific.
A man named Uutledge who was sleeping
at the hotel across the street from
post office rushed out with a shot gun in
hand and seeing the fleeing robbers fired
two shots at them but does not know if
they were hit. Telephone messages were
mmic nui< ;?u once ana a party beaded by
Sheriff Oilreath, of Greenville, and the
dogs is now making every effort to capture
the gang. No direct clue has as yet
been discovered, but the job was evidently
tbe work of experts.
Presentment of the Grand Jury.
To His Honor, James Aldrich. presiding
judge, January term 190.1, Union.
The Graud Jury herewith submits the
following report.
We have passed upon all bills furnished
us, nine in number, of which we
found true bills in seven casts and no
bills in two.
We visited the office of the Superintendent
of Education, Jail, Stockade,
Dispensary and L'oor House in i body.
At the office of Supt. of Education we
found everything in good condition but.
quarters very much cramped. O.ving
to increased need of funds for educational
purposes we recommend that tin law
goveiniug the disposition of dispensary
profits iu this county be changed so that
the amount which is now given to ordinary
county fund be divided equally between
ordinary county and school funds.
At the jail, we found everything neat
j_* - i -
una ciean nun prisoners contented with
their treatmeut. We recommend that
plaiD cots be provided for prisoners to
sleep on instead of making beds on the
lloor as at present. We also call attention
to recommendations of Grand Jury
last year about improvements on Jail
which have not been carried out.
We found the Stockade in rather bad
condition showing considerable lack of
cleanliness, but hope that when the new
stockade, now in process of erection, is
completed and occupied it will be moie
comfortable and that more attention will
be paid to cleanliness. We lecominend
that separate sleeping quarters be provided
for white and colored prisoners.
We found the Dispensary books very
systematically and as far as could judge
correctly kept.
Wc found the Poor House farm in excellent
condition, the houses very neatly
and well kept and the inmates well cared
for and contented. The general appearance
and good condition of everything
about the farm steaks well for the
management of the overseer, Mr. J. F.
Belue.
We think our Court House and Jail
are unsightly, uncomfortable aud entirely
inadequate in accommodations for the
growing needs of this prosperous count y,
and therefore r^ooraraend that steps be
taken by proper authorities toward the
erection of a modem, commodious and
comfortable Court House and Jail. In
the meantime we reommond that as
soon as possible sewerage connection be
provided for both Court House and Jail.
\UA n?s\n1sl HIOA ft" - t l??*k " ' *
?? u nuuiu t%trnj limb UUflJKH l*
able office chair be provided for the use
of the court stenographer.
We recommend that the law reqniring
tho Clerk of Court and Magistrates to
report to the County Auditor all moneys
turned over to the County Treasurer be
observed, and that our representatives in
the Legislature be requested to introduce
a bill requiring the County Dispenser to
report first to the County Auditor all
funds turned over to the County Treasurer.
The present dispensary law, we
believe, dots not require this, and it
should be done as a check on the Treas urer.
We learned that the road complained
of by former Grand Jury betweeu J. A
Fant's and D. B. Kant's, in Santo*, has
been put in good condition, and tint the
Board of County Commissioners h:is,
during the pad; year, erected some substantial
bridgos in the county, while
others are in course of construction.
Thanking your honor and the Solicitor
for courtesies shown.
Respectfully submitted,
W. II. 8 IIauius,
1 Foreman,
