The Big Carnival tinder the auspices
of the Knights of Pythias is in
Foil blast in Union. The epeelers are
putting in their best llcka, and the
lurglng orowda are swaying hither
tod thither with a desire to take in
he whole thiog. The email boy ie
a his glory, and the larger ones are
lot losing any of the enjoyment of
he occasion.
The erection of the tents, booths,
>te., began Monday, and the ringing
laramers and saws could be heard on
ill sides until noon of Tuesday, by
vhich time everything was in readiiess,
and the show people took a rest
o await the 6ignal at 7 o'clook Tueslay
night for the grand opening of
he whole buaLness all at once.
There are fourteen shows and a
lozen booths, lunch stands, shooting
lands, ring pitching stands, etc.

n the aggregation. The whole coujlosing

Each show Is under the general
upervi8ion of the owner, W. 8. Clayon,
a native born South Carolinian,
>nd an excellent, high-toned gentlenan.
Ha has his accomplished wife
nd charming daughter along with
kirn, and they have already made a
lumber of friends la Union.
Each show is under the management
of different men. Mr. H. L.
lush, of Texas, is in charge of the
idams & Hatch shows, of which there
re four. These shows consist of the
Eruption of Mt. Pelee, the Funeral
f McKlnley, the Electrocution of
he Assassin Czolgosz and the Money
and Dog Show. These shows are
lean and high classed and are nat
onized by ladies and children as
rell as men.
TO 8EB THE SHOWS.
To take in all the shows a good
lan is to go down below the jail and
tart at the beginning, you will find
he firs*t three tents on the vacant
3t this side of Mr. Dan Black's resience.
The merry-go-round oocupies the
rst position, where you can get a
ide either on horse back or in charit.
Dog and monkey show. This is
he second tent, where you will find
ho well trained dogs and the mishievous
monkey. One ?of the specj1
features of this show is the high
lvlngdog, which is seen to leap
rom a height of 45 feet. This dog
how ia an interesting sight.
Gay Paris . comes next. Here is
rhere you can get a glimpse of the
amous Midway dancers and high
:ickers. Gay Paris will no doubt
eceive a very liberal patronage. It

ON MAIN STREET.
Then comes the tents erected on
lain street. First you see an attracire
sign in front of a tent of solid
(lack cloth, which announced that
n the inside is to be seen the Girl
from up There. The features are

llustrated song and poses plastiqae.
Then comes the Old Plantation,
rhich is a vaudeville entertainment
bowing the old time plantation nero
minstrels, interesting to ladies
nd children as well as men. It is a
lean show and the old time negro
amp meeting, corn shucking, frolics,
tc., are irresistible.
Then comes the moving picture
how, produced by an electric mahine,
the Funeral of McKinley, the
Electrocution of Gzolgosz, and the
Eruption of Mt. Pelee. The statute
urning to life is a sight worth seeng,
it is full of mystery, and you
an't help wondering how it is done
,fter you have seen it. The eruption
>f Mt. Pelee is calculated to jar your
terves, but it is an interesting sight,
,nd gives some idea of the terrible
lisaster, of which so much has been
rritten this year. The fuperal of
0cKinley is reproduced by the fanous
cldctric pictures. You can alnost
imagine you hear the tread of
lie hcrsesand the tramD of the sol
Llers, who seem to be real liviDg
>eings. President McKinley is shown
lelivering his address 20 minutes beore
he was assassinated. This, the
uneral and the electrocution are
'ery realistic.
Then comes Osco, the snake eater,
vho "e.frts 'em alive." This Is a
light worth seeing once, but when
rou have seen ifc once you are satisled,
the horror of the thing makes
me shudder. This tent is near poice
headquarters. While across the
vay op court house square you will
find the famous
cycle WHIRL.

PEARL, THE FAT GIRL.
She Is a great girl and is said to
weigh over 58C pounds, She is by
long odds the biggest thing in the
whole aggregation. The silent question,
"Have you seen Pearl" stares
you in the face on every hand, as
hundreds of those who have are wearing
red tags upon which are the words
"Have you seen Pearl?" This show
is on the Fire Company's lot.
KO HIGH DIVER ON PROGRAM.
It was announced that the famous
high dive would be one of the features
of the Carnival. But very much to
the regret of all an accident happened
to his ladder which could not be repaired
In time and this very dangerous
though interesting feat had to be
cut out. However there is to be seen
daily in front of Mrs. Grant's house,
just below police headquarters, consisting
of high trapese perform m< es
and wire walking.
Besides the above shows admission
to m s of which is ten cents, the e
are a number of booths or stands,
where you can drop any surplus dimes
you may wish to get rid of. Thei?
are shooting stands, rirg pitohing
stands, lunch stands, etc.
NOTES ON THE CARNIVAL.
The management seem to be do*
termined upon their part to keep
down trouble. A negro was shooting
! at the white tags near Bailey & Copeland's
store, when one of his darts
| pierced a tag numbered 80, No. 80
I oalled for a watch, the paint having
I partially obliterated the 0, the boy
J held that It was a naught and the
j number was 80 and claimed the

! and the outsiders wore called upon
who decided the number was 86. In
a few minutes, however, the owner
heard of it aud without asking any

There are several booths on the
streets that should beolosed up. We
think they are hangers on of the Carnival,
and while Mr. Layton
Is a first class gentleman, and
has a good, clean show, generally
speaking, we think these hangers on

well as to the town.
Whoever is responsible for these skin
games should put a stop to it, wlieth*
