discontinuing his Bell phone service since

he at all surprised to hear of his having
his phone replaced.
The prospects are favorable for getting
out of town connection over the
Bell phones to Jonesville and Carlisle.
This will be weloomed by the rapidly
growing list of Bell phone subscribers.

Tuesday and Wednesday of
this week. Judge J. M. Greer went
as a delegate from Union Lodge. He
returned Thursday and says it was
one of the largest meetings ever held

Odd Fellows Oyster Supper.
The Union Lodge of Odd Fellows
served an oyster supper to Its members
and a few invited guests at the
Union Hotel last Wednesday evening
at ten o'clock. The Supper was very
much enioved bv all nre9ent. The
editor acknowledges an invitation to
be present upon, this delightful occasion,
and is very sorry that business
kept him away. The Odd Fellows
are flourishing in Union and their
list of members is increasing.

A Run Away.
On Wednesday afternoon while the
two Misses Ivey, daughters of Mr. Smith
Ivey, were driving into town from the
direction of Jouesville, their horse was
trotting rapidly,, as they neared the railroad
crossing at the power house the
horse got faster, possibly becoming
frightened at a train which was standing
on the track. When the buggy crossed
the track the horse shied and ran the
buggy against a telegraph pole breaking
one of the shayes of i he buggy. The
ladies either jumped out or were thrown
from the buggy by the shock. Neither
of them, however, were hurt which is
very fortunate and a narrow escape.

The Southern Bell people have sent
two forces of hands to put up the
new estimate for Uuion. Tho outside
force, or construction gang are
under the supervision of Mr. P. A.
Montgomery, while tho inside force
is under Mr. E. M. Burnham. They
are pushing the work rapidly, and
iniorm us thut they expect to have
ell the new phones installed, the new
switch board (a ltK) drop board which
has arrived) in place, and everything
working in au up-to-date manner by
the 21th instant, so that ail can enjoy
the privilege of a full phone service
Christmas.
There will be several new cables
and extensions put in as follows: A
GO pair cable, meaning 120 wires, will
run from central office terininatii g
at corner South and Bachelor streets
from which point the wires tosuVscribers
will be distributed along
South, Virgin nud Church streets.
A 00 pair cable will run to corner
Main and Garrett afreets, between E.
Nicholson's and W. II. Sartor's residences.
A *30 pair cnblo will run to
corner of Sharp Alley and Bachelor
street, and a 80 pair cable will run to
corner main and Judgment streets.
Now is a good time for all those
contemplating having the Bell phone
put in to not ify Manager West, while
the force is here and it can be done
in a jiffy. The opposition phones are
coming out with a rush, and the list
of subscribers is dwindling down to a
frazzle.
Manager West has made a fine
record as Manager since tbe Bell people
came to Union. He seems to
give entire satisfaction to both subscribers
and employers. This is saying
a great deal for a man who had
never had the sligest experience with
the businesss before he wns placed in

earnestly and faithfully for the interests
of the company since he has been
in charge, and we think the Bell people
were fortunate in securing his
services. We know nothing about
the telephone business, but we do
know when wo get prompt service,
and that seems to be his motto, and
we also know that a corporation as
largo as tho Southern Bell is not in
the habit of going to any trouble to
compliment their employees, especially
new men, unless they aro un-1
doubtedly worthy of it.
