I Death and the I*lilIo?opher.
A certain pbildsopbcr was in tin

an old friend had passed away: "Ab,
well, death comes to us all. It is no new
thing. . It Is what we must expect.
Pass me the butter, my dear. Yes,
death comes to all, and my frieud'a

Now, Death overheard these philosophical
remarks at different times,
nd one day he showed himself to the
philosopher.
"I nm Death," said he simply.
"Go away," said the man, in a panic.
"I am not'ready for you."
VYes, but it Is.ouc of your favorite
truisms that Death comes to all, and I
am but proving your words."
"Go away! You are dreadful!"
"No moro dreadful than I always
nm. But why have you chiftiged so7.
You have never feared the death that
has come to your friends. I never
heard you sigh w;hcn I carried off your
old comnanions. You have nlwnvs said.
It is tlie *vay of nil flesh.' Shall I

"Yes, for I am not ready."
"But I am. Your time lias come. Do

it as philosophically as you have taken
every other death."
And the philosopher and Death departed.

An EnRllih Sanctuary.
Beverley minster, 180 miles north of
London, is the shrine of St. John of
Beverley, who died in the year 721.
In 038 Athelstnn, king of Euglnnd,
gave scvernl privileges to the monastery,
one being the privilege .of sanctuary.
This was not merely for manslaying;
it was open to nil wrongdoers
except those who had been guilty of
treason. For ordinary offenses, such
ns horse stealing, cattle stealing, being
backward in accounts or being in receipt
of suspected goods, a man came
into sanctuary about a mile from the
monastery or church. There used to be
four crosses on the main.roads leading
to Beverley marking tlia-.limit of tho
area. In cases, of manslaughter and
murder it was not sufficient to be within
one of these crosses. Before the
fugitive could claim sanctuary he must
cuter the church and sent himself in a
stone clmir known as the "frid stool"
or "freed chair." To this place many
fled for refuge from all parts of the
country.
Locking: Up.
The lecturer pleaded with the crow:d
to "look up." In impassioned tones he
cried: "God always helps the man
that looks up! Never look down, my
friends, and do not* wrfMo ton much
time looking sldewaya. Look up, and
keep on looking up! 1 never 3tncw a.

a man in this audience who can say
that he always looks up?

Donna nnd Her Voice.
Onee upon a time there was a famous
prima donna who <lbnde a contract

All went well until the prima donna
found a dressing room assigned to her

Then she complained that she was entirely
too hoarse to sing, aud the impresario
had to make polite remarks to
