CHOATE'S ADVICE.
It Led a Choleric Client Into t!i<
.lis of 1'cuce.
It seems always to have lain within
the power of the distinguished lawyel
and humorist, Itufus Choate, to lead
a choleric? client from ?v.nva r-r
into tlio paths of peace. Just before
tho war a southern gentleman wan
dining with a friend in one of tlie best
hotels of ltoston. He was of French
Creole extraction, and his name was
Delaeour, says a writer in I.ippineott's
Magazine. The waiter was a colored
man, and the southerner gave his orders
in a very domineering fashion,
finding fault freely with what was put
before him and tlie way in which it
was served. Finally the waiter became
incensed and told Mr. Delaeour to go
to a place warm and remote. The latter
sprang furiously to his feet and
would have shot the offender dead if
ho had not been restrained by his
wiser friend, who said:
"You ean't do that sort of thing here.
You will have to remember where you
are."
"Do you suppose that I am going to
put up with such insolence and not
be revengedV" said the enraged man.
"Certainly not. i?ut do it by process
of law."
The land!.ml was first interviewed
and the waiter discharged. That was
not Mill.-i d to satisfy the woutulcd
feelings of Mr. Delacorr. Ho asked
who ivaa the host lawyer In the city
and was told ii was lCufuH Choate.
Making his way to his otliee, he said:
"Mr. Choate, I want to engage you
in a case. What will your retaining
fee beV
"About
The check was made out and handed
over.
"Sow." said the lawyer, "what are
fie facts of the case?"
lie was told. Said Mr. Clionte
thoughtfully:
"1 know the t niled States law on
the subject will, and i know the law
of the commonwealth of Massachusetts,
and 1 can assure you. sir, that
there is no power 0:1 earth strong
enough to force you to go to that
place if you don't want to go. And if
1 were yon I wouldn't."
"Well," said the southerner, acceptin:,'
the situation. "I think I'll take your
advice." And they patted good friends.
