Tho peuehbiow porcelain i; of Chinese
manufacture and is about MO
years old. It Is not. as sometimes supposed,
the designation ot' a particular
shade of color, hut a rare ami peculiar
glaze, which not merely trovers the
surface of too vessel, but penetrates
the entire t .vture of the article, so
that If the same bo broken tho internal
structure i identical with that of the
surface. Tho method by which this resuit
is reached is unknown, and much
money baa been expended in vain to
discover it. The ware is in a sense,
therefore, the result of a happy accident.
Specimens of it are rare in China to
day, where it is prized as highly as
anywhere el. \ Most of that of which
there is definite knowledge was taken
from China by the Dutch In the days
when they monopolized tiie trado with
that country and from Holland haa
made Its way over Europe. The specimens
in this country have almost nil
of them come cither from Holland direct
or by way of France, whither
pieces of it were early carried by the
Dutch, arousing unusual interest
tunong the French potters.
Pen vis Before Sulr.e.
Tho evening was advanced when a
venerable squire of ancient name aiul
lineage arose to propose a toast. Seldom
have 1 heard cue more successful.
He began modestly. It Is always
well to begin modestly. "I i'eel," said
the good man, "that for a plain country
squire like myself to address a digallied
body like the presbytery of St.
Andrews, including In iU number various
learned professors, i? indeed to
cast pearls before swluo."
lie bad to pause long ere lie got further.
Thunderous applause broke forth.
The swine cheered as if they would
pevor leave off. Wo ail knew perfectly
what tho laird meant. I was silting
next to him as he spoke tho words. I
heard them with those cars.?"Twentyfive
Years of St. Andrews."
Dnte on Silver Coins.
Most people have an old silver coin
of some kind which they are keeping
as a relic either fur sentimental reasons
or la-cause they think it worth
more than its face value. In some inslslices
ihe date or tho inscription lias
been worn away and it is impossible to
read it even with a strong glass.
The following inothcu, originally
practiced at the mint to dis< over Iho
genuine coins when t'.lv r was called
in, will enable any one to read an obliterated
Inscription;

inscription will bo plainly visible In a

fc'r nrlnff Her Feelln/Vfi.
"You don't write," the treasurer of
tho savings hank said gently to tho old
colored woman. "Just touch the pen."
She did bo. her business was concluded
and her ..ere spared. The official
inly' 1 have said, "You cali't
write," and that would have been true,
but tiro difference between plain truth
and considerate truth Is sometimes as
marked as the distinetion between a
boor and a geutlomau.?Youth's Companion,
