HUT ONCH A YRAR,
The sales of the dispensary in Union
[>n Monday ami Tuesday amounted to
two thousand and thirty dollars and
lifty rents. The sales on Christinas
rve being over thirteen hundred dollais.
Notw ithstamling tliis extraordinary puri-hase
of strong drink it is somewhat retmirkahie
to say that there Wi-re only
four arre.-t> made during the entire d;.v
and night Christmas eve. This is a
I'onsi ierahlc* amount to l?e spent in one
day for strong drink, hut we believe
that the dispensary is responsible for
the <|iiietude that prevailed throughout
the day. We ran all remeinher very
distinrtlv during the reign of the open
hat room that there were possibly a
liuiKirt'tl orunKen men 10 oc seen on
our streets ami arrests soinelitues ran
up into the dozens, while brawls and
lights, cursing and swearing was 110 unusual
ueeurrenee upon the streets. It
does seem that the morals of the
drinking element are r n the upward
grade. The most of the large purchase
of whiskey this Christmas, possibly NO
per cent, of it. was taVm to the quietude
of the home, where it has la-en stored
away to he drank in moderation. This
is so much bettor than formerly, when
the social drink at the bar nouncl up in a
drunken brawl or general boisuousiicss
and rowdyncss, that we cannot he.,
giving the dispensary credit for havii o
made a step forward, in the tense of
morality at least. Another commendable
feature is the fact that the attractive
feature formerly held out t?. tin- hoys
b\ the open bar with its comfortable
chairs, line mirrors, billiards, pool, etc .
to capture the young man in his even
ings after business hours has been removed.
We believe this is one of the
best features of the dispensary law. an i
we believe we can see a beneficial result
in the rising generation already.
We have small hope of reforming the
drunkard, hut if we can keep tlie* temptation
out of reach of his children awell
as our own it will not be many
years before w e will have a generation
of sober and industrious young men
t hat we may he proud of, and the tip) h 1
