All roads except those on pure snud
> can be materially Improver by tile
drainage, says Professor Ira O. linker
of the Illinois experiment station. Tills
U the opinion of many farmers In several
communities with whom the writer
has conversed on this'subject.. In
Oeach community this is universally the
* opinion of the farmers who have had
the best success In ilrainlmr tlielr own
farms. The cost of tile drainage Is not
: \ . great?nay, about DO cents per rod, or
f tOO per mile?and the Improvement Is
permanent, with no expense for main-,
tenance, and the benellt Is immediate
and certain.
Further, tile drainage is the very best
preparatlonfor a gravel or a stone road.
Gravel or broken stone placed upon an
undralned foundation la almost sure to
itnft gradually, whatever Its thickness,
whereas a thlnuer layer upon an under.
* . drained. roadlxsl will give nnich better
service. "Itonds tiled without gravel
v . are better than roads graveled with
out tile."*
vf, The road should bo underdralncd so
aa, to keep the water level well below
, "" the road surface. In most localities I
this can be accomplished reasonably I
well by laying a line of farm tile three
or three and one-half foot l?olow the
read surface along one side of the roadway.
It Is sometimes claimed that
r j there should be a tile on each side of
' the road.
Some tests recently made by the Illinois
experimental station (not yet pul>*
? llfihed) seem to Indlontc that one line
will give fairly good drainage tinder
the most adverse conditions. The experiment
consisted In the drainage of
a pie,* of land selected as the worst
that could be found In n part of the
state notorious as having a large area
of hardpan which It was generally
considered could got be nnderdrnlnod
"because the soil held water like a
Jug." Lines of tiles were placed two
and onp-.half feet deep and HO feet
apart, ^fye water level at a i>olnt midway
between the linos of tiles was
lowered 18 Inches, when at the
same time the water level In the undrained
portion of the field was only
alx inches below the surface. In this
case the surface of the wound water
had' a slope of one foot In 25 feet,
but .In a more porous soil the slope I
won!<1 be much less. Therefore a sln4fT
fie line of tile three or three and one.
w *" half feet deep. If of adequate size, will I
fcfve nearly perfect dralna-re; and a second
line will fiot inaterh^'y Improve It.
Some writers on good reads advocate
the use of a Hue of tile under the middle
of the traveled port! :n and some
advocate u Hue on each skle of the
wbeclway. The object sought by these
tiles Is rapid drainage, and therefore It
Is urged that they should he laid near
the surface. It Is dnuhlfnl whether
aujr water will reach the tile since the
toad surface when wet Is puddled by
the traffic. which prevents the water
T percolating through the soil, and It Is
?" - certain that In clay or loam the drainage
thus obtained Is of no practical
nine. More than one farmer has tried
to drain his barnyard by laying tile
near the surface, always without appre- I
dabie effect.
While a line of tile on one side of the
r road Is usually sufficient, there Is often
t a great difference as to the side on
which It should be laid. If one side
of the road Is higher than the other,

Intercept the ground water that la
flowing down the slope under the sur(KM.
The tile should be laid In the bottom
of the side ditch below the frost line.
Of'course the tile should hare a uniform
grade and a sufficient fall and mi
odeqnate outlet. The size of the tile
,Inquired wHl depend upon the length
or tA% line and the grade of the ditch,
hut local experience In farm drainage
Is like!j to be a better guide than any
jjnyal statement that can be made
w. hare, farm drainage Is almost certain
fj) to precede road drulnage In any particular
locality.
The side ditches are to receive the
water from the surface of the traveled
wyj and should carry It rapidly and
entirely away from the roadside. They
ara.ujmful also to Intercept and carry
off the water that would otherwise flow
from the ride bills upon the road. OrdfaaiDy
they need not be deep and. If
poa^ltyc, should have a broad, flaring
side toward the traveled way to prevent
accident If a vehicle should t>e
crowded to the extreme side of the
roadway. The outside bank should be
flat enough to prevent caving. The
proper form of ditch Is easily made by
the usual road machine or road grader.
