Items of Interest Gathered from Various Sections by our Correspondents. Our Carlisle Letter. Editor Timks:?Monday being court day and Liz wishing to do sonic shopping we boarded the train for your city, and after a p'eisant and rapid ride w c saw the tall spires of the cotton mills looming up in the blu o ether and we were thar! Union wa syquitc full of the bone and sinue of the county and we noticed that some of them were ipiite full of what we folks from North Carolina call tangle foot whiskey, and the eftVct'seemed to be the same whether dispensed or 8"ld from high licensed bar rooms, of course we only judge by observation. See! Of course we buy a little for Emeline, who is still sick, and we find it a costly medicine, having to pav 00 cents per pint for the same you can get in the mountains for -50 cents Now if there aint money in that for somebody I don't know anything about business and there is no u-c in pu'ting on loug faces and saying we have no bar rooms and so fourth. You em't mike any compromise along that line with the Devil. You can't change the odor of a rose by calling it any other name. See! Liz says to me, "par there are a goodly number of dudes about Union, what do you think of em? 1 believe you would ho one yourself if you wern't too old!" Says I, Liz a regular dude is a cross between a dandy and a monkey. I haven't the capacity of either, but 1 don't think there is but one full Hedged one in Union, I won't call his name for I snppose every one knows him. >*.iw take the dudes generally and they are good, clever fellows and are alt more or less handsome as th sy wi u 1 not dress to attract notice if sucli were not the case. Now it is not the well dressed man who is a dude but the loudest dressed. I certainly love to see a man or woman well dressed. "Dress never made the man," but it makes the man feel at ease in any company and it is a man's duty to dress well ? it'he can. I would not object to being enca ed in a suit of Harry & Jitlk's best?it is human nature! L z got acquainted w ith some of the folks up there Monday and among the numb- r were Epps Tucker, Woods ?J?ter and Dr. li i-. She says ' Epps Tucker is >o funny," but 1 could not get her opinion of the other two. That gal is hard to catch up with. Site is a cute as a briar, specially when she h.oks at you sort of sideways. We d n't hear anything more from our e itton mill and we suppose if is Qotise verrons or some such interrogation. (Juess the gentleman who is getting it up is having a much more enjoyable time in picniomg, fishing, etc., 1 know I should. Our city liglws are still glimmer ing in the dim distance, but lend no enchantment to the view and sometimes cuss words aic heard on the still night air as some pedestrian wends his lonesome way to the depot iLful into snmp nf our n-nvniiln traps. u!d this be thus? Inght! Let us have light! Jue Konv. 1 '*JoiiesviUc News Notes. The continued rains arc making it serious for the country.
