The Wonderful Transformation
That Has Taken Place at Thia ,
Picturesque 4ijtot.
Tlu' mill building at Buffalo has been t
finished, also the. large eng ue house. 1
Four of the seven | oiverful boilers have
been placed in position and neatly endossed
in bricK, the other three are {
being placed. The engine and boiler t
room* are models of t'leir kind, they are t
large and roomy and the floor is to be
laid with beautiful tiling, the doors and i "
window casings are of oak. The boilers |
are capable of developing to j
horse power. There is an arrangement ' ]
to take the ashes from the furnaces to j t
a tunnel underneath where they are!,
dumped into ears and taken away from j ,
the building. Everything is being gut- j (
ten in readiness for an earlv starting of j |
this wonderful mill. The machincrv is m
practieallv all in tue mill and in position, s
with the exception of the looms, which t
will he the last machines to he placed ,
in position. The shafting is up and the x
building has been wired both for lights |
and for electric power. The electric t
motors, 12 in number, arc in position ^
and ready for the power to he turned t
on. The niasaie work, tioor and wains- ,
coating in the closets of the mill would
do credit to a 5th avenue hotel. Wo
have never seen anything more beautiful.
The wainseoating the entire length r
of the stairway is of portiand cement,
and if it was not for the fact of the c
thousands of different machines in po- v
sitron one could easily imagine him- g
self in some castle, so handsome is the
finishing work on the inside of the
building. It is very evident that money has
not been spared in making this
mill attractive as well as substantial.
The grading of the ground in front of
the mill has already begun, and the
unsightly knowls are disappearing and
the gullies are being tilled no, and it is
very evident that the grounds are to be
made as attractive as the picture of the
mill represents. A fountain is to be (
placed in front of tbc mill, and with
the pressure from the stand pipe on the I
high eminence in the hack ground the 1
fountain will throw a stream feet a
high. i
It was our pleasure on this trip to ho s

plans for the town of Buffalo as he mi- a

questionably the finest mill town to he j
found anywhere in this country. But t

In the village there have already 1
been lii"> double houses built, all of
which are neat and attractive, eununo- '
dious and so arra ged that no building 1
will he obscured by another, and each 1
of them will have plenty of room for a ' f
nice front yard with a loomv lot in rear. j'
These houses are neatly plastered with y
ceiling overhead. Wide straight streets '
have been graded through the town,
which is situated on a high eminence in '
rear of the mill, while a winding*
mountain road is being graded around '
the hill from the mill which rises with (
a gentle grade to the hill top, intersect- >
ing the main public road near the hand- '
some residence of the superintendent '
and the live other overseers. These 5
residences are built in regular city style J
with beautiful tile hearths and tall '
costly mantles, thoroughly equipped 1
with all modern conveniences, such as <
waterworks, electric lights, bath tubs <
and sewerage. The superintendent's''
house commands a magnificent view of '
the surrounding countrv. The Blue j
Ridge mountains are in sight on the oik- '

The water mains have been laid from J

fire purposes, along the streets, and
everything is in readiness for turning

will he equipped with water works and
electric light service. Who could wish
for a better location or better accomiuo- ..
dations, verily it will be living in the I
country and enjoying every convenience 1
of the city. t

An up-to-date sewerage! system is to
be put in not only for the mill, but for
the accominodation of every citizen of <.
Buffalo. Work began on this yester- '
day. A filter plant is to be put in for .*
clearing the water for the use of the i
town and mill, this work also began .]
this week. An ice factory is to be |
built near the factory which will supplv j
the operatives and their families with \
ice during hot weather. The streets
of the town are to be macadamized
throughout. Mr. Duncan says lie is I
going to to do this with the money
he saves annually in taxation outside I

from Monarch to Buffalo. The pond is '
being rebuilt upon a much larger and j
more substantial plan than the one
whose dam broke during the recent
freshet. This pond is 1,000 feet long 1
and 1100 feet wide, it will hold something
like 2o,000,ooo gallons of water. The <
water for use in the boilers will How
naturally through a large pipe from the
center of the, pond without pumping.
A sufficient opening has been left on <
the lower side of the dam to allow '
surplus water during a freshet to have i
an outlet in addition to the large ditch <
on the side through w hich the stream I
will How when the pond iH full. On 1
either side of the stream above the dam I
the hills gently slope upward, thus 1
forming a natural means of an additional j
basin or j?ohd. Mr. Duncan w ill utili/.e |
this advantage by building a wall of ,
masonry at the side of the upper dam, .
which will cause the water to rise <i feet
up the darn before it can pass around in
the ditch. This will form a second '
pond or lake above the original pond, ,
