Some of the Truest, Noblest and llravrst Men That 7?ver Faced an JSncm y Were to be FOUND AMONG" THE PRIVATES. BY J. L. sTH.VIN. During the early part of the spring the Federals must have had not lens thsn 3.000 troops 011 Kdisto Island and at least 500 drums. Edingsvillc was 'heir headquarters. From White Point we could seethe Federal flag. Gunboats lay in the inlet. Sometimes one and sometimes half a doaen could be seen ar. one right. These would couie up to the Point and shell our picket*. Sometimes they would run up to King's Point and shell the country froiu one river to the other. Our men built a battery in the edge of die woods about 600 yards of White Point ami put a sir-go gun in it. Between this battery and the point grew a clomp of pines, on a knoll partly covered with palm hushes and o hci shrubbery, thus our banery was partially concoaled. Two other men and myself were standing on picker in this clump of pines, while two of our officers rode down to the beach. Away down the inlet we saw the .-moke rise from an iron-clad gunboat it turned iis bow and came plifting towards us. The officei* were in a direct line between us and die gunboat. Our gun was disabled. Behind the sand hill we remained until the filing ceased on the part of tlie gunboats. One of the noats nad pa*-e?l us and had gone up the river and began shelling the woodland. We mounted our horses and rode buck to our pickets, only to find them in a state of excitement, but every man was at his post. A dozen or so of the Federals landed and oh trie to the house formerly oc en pied t>y our pickets as headquarters They were under tbc nroiection of the guuboat all the time they were ?>? shore. A body of troops had landed at White Point and come oui as far as onr battery. It was now neoes-ary to find out the full par Ttculars before the official report was S'-nt to heaoquar ers. To do tl is two men were >ent hack as far as the battery, and to the point, where they ran into the enemy's scouts and w.-re fired upon by them. This ended one of the most Stirling events which took place on White Point daring our stay there; except, that afterwards tome of our pickets woe an.oushed and fired upou by the enemy's scui's. After this the gunboat lay near the shore?so near that at night we could hear the voices of thoie on noard. At every hour through the night we could hear the b? li ring and the sentinel cry out "all's well." besides, he would give the hour A II tb A falumla \iTnrn nniv \r\ flin hun/lj I of the enemy, except Johosse, and it wa* at their uiercy. We stayed about two mon'hs at Camp Walsh. We had plenty of sugar and drank sassafras tea three times a day, arid eat lice until we were tired out on it. Ah a sanitary preeuuti ?n we moved our cucamplU'.'Uf every mon h or two. When we get to Virginia I shall ask the indulgence of your readers 10 pay toy respects to tin? "Conscript, law." There wt) b?-gan to see and feel its practical working. On the coast we had a great deal of fun out of it. Frank Millwood and his cousin Sheit Fowler furnished fun for the command. Jim McCuliouch took no small part in it, too. These an I many other matters connected with it, 1 will try and bring in at the proper time and place. I promised the readers, th ugh, that I would not 1 O take tlieiu hack on Bear's Island. Tins is not an island in its proper sense. U is a peninsular, lying between Pon Pon, Edisto and A*hepoo rivers, the waters of which arc connected by a canal. This canal had been u-'ed by the planters to transport their products to market. Roads were, in naanv nlaces. thrown * v r ' up and constituted embankments to protect the rice farms. In some places a horse walking on it, would shake the ground for several feet around. As a stragetic point it had no inilitiry significance whatever. The roads from Jacks* nborough to the point at the head of St. Helena >ound was, for about four miles, under cover of our guns at Willtown battery, on the opposite side of E listo river. Th*s river below Willtown was obstructed so as to render the passage of vessels impossible. With these advantages in our favor the Confederate authorities discontinued the picket guard on Bear's island, and in April, '62, they were drawn in. (To be continued.) Snntue S flings.
