Milwaukee, Juuo 13.?Tho Democratic
stnte convention to elect four delcgates-nt-lnrgo
and to ratify tho selection
of 20 district delegates to tho national
convention at Kausas City was
called to order at the Allmmbru theater
nt 11 o'clock by George W. Peck, chairman
of the state central committee.
Judge J:mios H. McGillan of Groeu Bay
was made temporary chairman. Ho
spoke in part us follows:
"We have assembled for tho purpose
of choosing delogates to the national
convention at Kansas City, when a man
will be chosen who will succeed William
McKinlcy as president of tho United
States on March 4, lflOl.
"I believe that the opportunity of Do- ]
lnocracy has arrived. Tho Republican
party has given this government four
years of broken pledges -and broken i
promises. They may talk to yon of .
prosperity, but we must admit that it is
the prosperity of wealth and not the 1
prosperity of labor. Look whore wo i
may we see the laboring man engaged 1
in a life and death strugglo with capital
for an existence." <
Mr. McGillan then charged the Re- ]
publican administration with fostering
the trusts; attacked tho courso pursued
in the enactment of tho Dinglcy tariff 1
hill, ami criticised the administration's ' 1
Cuban policy in deluging that island j 1
x\ itli "a horde of offieoseekim* carnet- I

At the conclusion of Temporary Chair- 1
man MeGillau's speech, committees on
credentials and a permanent organization
were appointed and recess was
taken.

Ohio Democrats Advocate Dewey Fqr
Vice President.
Coi.UMlirs, O., June 13.?All tlio preliminary
work of the Democratic state
convention has been completed so that
the delegates can proceed to business.
The committee were in session duriug
the forenoon and the delegates met in
the afternoon and selected the new stato
committee and oflicers of tho convention.
i
Tho committee on resolutions will
have many differences of opinion to settle
on the language of the platform, but
there are no radical differences regarding
tho issues. The differences are
mainly as to the form in which tho |
declarations shall be made. . 1
There will be contests for all'places
on the state ticket.
The McLean men control the convention
by a large majority. There is some (
talk of making John R. McLean a dele- ' (
gate at large, notwithstanding his pur- j
put-so to sail for Europe next Saturday, !
and not attend tho Kansas City conveu- |
tion.
Tin-agitation for Admiral Dewey as
the candidate for vice president con- '
tinues, and it is claimed to be entering i
into the contest for delegates at large. |
Dewey was entertained here last week i ,
by Kilbonrne. Still those who talk most
ai>out llryan and Dewey as the ticket at
Kansas City seem to favor Lentz. Although
McLean cannot bo here he is
represented by confidential men who
arc noncommittal ou the Dewey caudi- '
rlacv.

had quite a numb t of callers before the
cabinet meeting, including Senator
llanna,. chairman of the Republican
national committee, who will go to Philadelphia
tomorrow to attend the meeting
of the subcommittee.
Thomas K. Lowrv of Minnesota, one
of the delegates at large to the Philadelphia
convention, was another caller. Ho
is pushing Senator Washburn of his
state for the vice presidency. Although
the gossip around the White House in
connection with the president's callers ,
centered jmrticularly about the vioo
presidential nomination, the senators
who conferred with Mr. McKinloy were
reticent, concurring only in the statement
that the situation had not yet
crystali'/.ed.
It is stated that the vice presidential
nomination will probably go cast.

hut none were ki.led outright.
