' Town and Pnnnty,
All Explosion.
About four o'clock Mondsiy morning
lliere was a fearful explosion lieaid b\
Uioee up at the time, and many were
waked up by J lie report. It causal the
houses in various s. ctions of Hie town to
tninble as if shook by sin ca'th quake
It was some time in the day b fore any
inioimailcn could lie gathered as to what
it was and where it occurred. It dcveloped
that a dozen sticks of dynamite had
got wet out tit the camp near Buffalo,
and some of tiie hands had laid them
near the tire to dry. They got too dry
it seems, and there was a premature explosion
that shook the earth and knocked
a big hole in the ground. Foitunateh
no one was killed, several were hit with
the (lying dirt and one negio had his
face pretty' badly hurt.
"What is That?"
Was the question uttered by half a
dozen people at once last Tuesday
evening, hi such a loud voice as to
eause everylxxJy in hearing to turn ;
in the direction indicated, just in time to i
get a glimpse of Something as it shot '
around the corner of the new bank. A
grand rush was made for the corir?r,
this was seen by the people alonr the en- i
lire Mam si reel and the excitement was !
intense, and in less than 20 minnt>s the 1
streets had 1 he appearance of a big sale 1
day with cotton goinsat t) cents a pound. 1
Business was completely parah z d for
half an hour, merchants went to see j 1
while clerks crowded -each oilier in the <
doors to get a glimpse of something they
had no idea what. It was just simply 1
the arrival of the tiist Auloinihle that
had ever shown rip in Union, and it was
in charge of Mr. W. 8. Dorr, who left 1
Laurens after 2 o'clock Tuesday evening
and arrived here ot 0:.'10. I Ic sa\ s ,
that he can average about 20 miles an
liour over ordinary country roads, lie 1
left for Chester yesterday. 1
